i really don't get the hate for bennett. i mean yeah daya can be annoying but why bennett? what are your thoughts on him?
I found it kind of gross and problematic how the relationship between Bennett and Daya was so romanticised in season 1. This we know: What Bennett did is illegal. For a reason. He’s in a position of power over a woman in a very vulnerable situation. The show basically didn’t address this at all in season 1, they were so busy throwing together a relationship between two cute people with no build up (they are in love after like a week).
In season 2 however they made up for this, and Bennett is just a huge douchebag imo. Say what you want about Pornstache, but Daya believes he was sent to jail for something she didn’t think him guilty of. We, the viewers, know of course Pornstache needs to be in jail yesterday forever and always, but I understand that Daya feels guilty. And Bennett refuses to see how problematic he is being.
He is in control of the lives of these women and he misuses that power, because he gets blackmailed - a consequence of his own stupid actions. By law Bennett has entered in to a relationship with someone unable to give consent. He, and Daya, are so dumb about the whole thing, and even though they had some cute moments I don’t think the relationship reflects well on Bennett or Daya as characters.
But then again I found Bennett way more interesting in season 2, and I also sometimes think about the fact that if he was played by anybody other than Matt McGorry I would probably hate him with every fiber of my being.
