New York City: What gets you up in the morning?

My alarm. In conjunction with the fact that if I don’t at least make the bus after the one I usually try to get to work, I’ll arrive during the morning coffee break and everyone will see me come in late.

I do not enjoy mornings.   

Hong Kong: What is your earliest childhood memory?

When I was about two, my parents took me on holiday to Oban. I guess it stood out in my mind because it was the first thing I really experienced that was very different from just being around where we lived. It’s patchy, but I remember snippets of it. I remember the bed I slept in (apparently as a toddler I was very excited to get to sleep in a Grownup Bed), and the dirt road leading up to the cottage we stayed in, and...something about getting shouted at by a lifeguard at the pool for trying to go down a waterslide I was far too small to be attempting to go down.

14) whats your most bizarre pet peeve

When drivers stop and wave me across the road.

Look, pal, there are two possibilities here. Either you’re the only car on the road, in which case if you’d just kept going I could already have crossed behind you by now; or you’re not the only car on the road, in which case no I am not going to cross when neither you nor I have any idea what the other cars are planning.

Please spare us both this excruciating moment of awkwardly hesitating and gesticulating at each other, and just keep driving. Please.

15) what is your favorite memory

I’ve never really thought about it before, but...probably the night of my first President’s Dinner at the QM. It would have been an amazing night with my friends either way, but I also got given the President’s Award for that year, which I really was not expecting (I thought I wasn’t eligible, for reasons not particularly worth getting into). I did lights for the last time as the head of tech team.

More than that, I didn’t attend my graduation, so President’s Dinner ended up being my last hurrah at university. I had my masters and a good graduate job lined up, I was going to be moving to another country...it was all this huge exciting unknown back then. A lot of my friends graduated that year too. There was a lot of hugging and happy tears.

It was a good night.

17) what ‘small things’ things terrify you
