Logitech G27 Cockpit: Precise Shifter Resistance
As mentioned in my earlier blog, I ordered a set of longer springs and Nitrile ball (chose this over Polyurethane) for the shifter. Unfortunately the springs were softer than stock and the balls were too small. So if you decide to purchase the balls from McMaster-Carr, make sure you buy ones that are 1/4" or 5/16" because the 3/16" I bought went right through the shifter housing holes. If adventurous, you can try searching for stiffer springs. Stock SPEC follows: 3/16" diameter and 13/16" long with compression length of 1/2".
Since using the springs I bought from McMaster-Carr is now pointless, I decided to continue using the stock metal ball. I took out the springs and inserted 2 of the Polyurethane balls as the spacer for the shifter hole (where the spring go into), and inserted a 3/16" diameter screw head and 1/2" long into it. The screw stuck out the hole but fear not, I simply just tightened the screw into the Polyurethane ball. Doing so, I was able to precisely govern the height of the stock metal ball that I will be putting on top of the screw. The higher the screw, the stiffer it is to shift and vice versa. To make the metal ball transition from hole to hole more smooth, I wrapped the 3 holes with red duct tape (doesn't have to be red).
As shown in the bottom right picture, how it was before the modification the stock metal ball and the spring below it. On the far left picture, you can see the newly installed screw sitting inside the housing on top of the two Nitrile balls (not shown). Lastly you see the red duct tape I used to smoothen the transition of the shifts on the top left image.
It is very rough and honestly I feel like I am breaking the G27 shifter because there is so much resistance and shock due to the lack of the spring. I will try it out for another week, if nothing breaks, then I will stick with it. I am most annoyed with how loud it is during the shifts, I am still thinking of ways to tone down the "clicks."
