Iâm dying
I Like His Jacket
TW: Like a the tiniest dash of homophobia, but itâs mainly too boy hanging out
âLJ!â
Logan turned his head around, promptly seeing the neighbor boy jumping up and down at the fence. He still couldnât believe he was a year younger than the excitable boy, it surprised him to see someone so giddy to talk to a younger party.
âUm..What?â
âLJ! You said your middle name was,â Patton mimicked Logan, but much more exaggerated, âJean!â
âOh.. so you changed my name to LJ?â
Patton shrugged, starting to climb the fence.
âI dunno, I always wanted a cool nickname, like Monty or something. I donât want to be called PV though, thatâs weird.â
Logan rudely mumbled an âuh huhâ, turning back to his book.
âWhatcha reading?â
âFrog and Toad.â Logan answered, his annoyance fading, âDad says it's below my reading level, but I like it.â
Patton plopped down next to him, whimpering a soft âowâ as his bottom hit the dirt ground a little harder than intended.
âCan I read with you?â
Logan was confused for a minute, before shifting the book so Patton could see. Strange, no one ever wants to sit with him.
âWow, I like his jacket,â Patton hummed, his knees up to his chest.
âMe too.â
Logan had never been too sure what it was about Patton. At first, he figured it was because heâd never met another kid while he wasnât at school before. Logan was homeschooled for the early years of his life, and most kids in the neighborhood were his older brothersâ friends, so where was the time to socialize?
Patton moved here after Logan, he said he was originally from Montgomery county. As far as the introvert knew, he was born in Quebec and grew up in Logansport, Cass county. (Though, his parents shamelessly said âassâ county, like it was even remotely funny.) Thatâs what his father made him rehearse to say, at least. He never understood why the name, Logan, but perhaps his fathers had some blatant inspiration from the city.
The boy next door was strange, though. He talked with such emotion, and wanted to rustle and tussle without ending Loganâs life like his brother did. Heâd never seen someone so scared of hurting another person, Patton even apologized to flowers when he stepped on them.
âIâve always wanted to read this book,â Patton mumbled, starting to lean onto Logan.
âReally?â Logan said, a little too excitedly for his taste.
âYeah, my dad said I couldnât.â
Logan mightâve leaned back onto Patton.
âWhy?â
Patton paused.
âSaid it was gay, so I wasnât allowed to. I donât get why though.â
âI see nothing wrong with that. Theyâre just neighbors, like how weâre just neighbors.â
âRight!â Patton yelled with victory, âThatâs what I thought!â
Patton hugged Logan tightly, most of his grip was settled on Loganâs scrawny shoulders. It was almost bone crushing, way too strong for someone his age. It made Logan glad he wasnât brawler, Patton mightâve broken someone's spine at this rate.
âToo tight!â Logan yelped.
âSorry!â Patton giggled sheepishly.
Logan pushed Pattonâs arms off of him, but still continued to lay against him.
âYou gonna get any taller?â Patton asked, mischief in his voice.
âNope!â Logan laughed, flicking the taller boyâs shoulder.
âWhatâs the guess this time?â
â5â6.â Logan affirmed.
âThatâs better than 5â4, my mom thinks Iâll be 5â11, shortie.â
âDoubt it, youâll be the size of Wall-E at this rate.â
Patton giggled, shifting to lay down.
âYouâre my favorite short person, LJ.â Patton declared, âI know a lot of short people too.â
âYou're my favorite tall person, Pat.â Logan reciprocated, âI know a lot of tall people.â
Patton grinned, a certain shimmer in his eye.
âDoes this mean weâre best friends now?â
Loganâs eyes widened, looking down at the older boy.
âSure, I guess it does.â
âYes!â Patton pumped his fist in the air, as he chortled.
Logan smiled at the boy next to him, discarding his book to the side.

Mistakes.
TW: very implied internalized homophobia, unsatisfactory ending, pining, bad feelings, kissing
Patton mightâve missed on what Logan was particularly talking about, but he could stare. He was a picture perfect definition of a sap, well, a clueless sap as Roman would put it.
âGod his eyes are gorgeous, theyâre like dark chocolate.â Patton thought, âif he moves under his lamp a little more, I bet I could see the bronze sparkles in his eyes.â
Though, a deep full bodied voice would interrupt his thoughts.
âPatton?â
âHuh? What, what is it?â Patton uselessly blabbered.
âShit, Iâve been droning on for too long.â Logan guiltily apologized, âIâm boring you, arenât I?â
âYou must be kidding me then, Lo! I could listen to your voice for days!â
Patton lovingly smiled as he did for all of his friends.
âWait- wait, I didnât mean-â Patton yelped, once more making a fool out of himself.
âYou could?â Loganâs voice dropped to a whisper, rumbling like a quiet storm.
âHe moved under the lamp. Gosh itâs like the night sky over there.â
âI mean-..yeah, I could.â Patton gulped.
Logan shifted, avoiding eye contact.
âOh, well, um..â Loganâs pale and boney hand set on top of Pattonâs, âThank you.â
Patton shyly giggled, his heart rate picking up.
âWell itâs true. Your voice is just, so deep.â Patton sputtered, âYouâre welcome.â
A comfortable silence surrounded them while they sat on Loganâs bed.
âIs it crazy to think he's just gorgeous? No, no, Iâm not gay, I just think heâs a good looking guy is all. Right. Right. Right?â
Patton turned to look at Logan again. The aforementioned gentleman had moved closer, their thighs were pressed together. He felt his breath hitch, watching Loganâs eyes follow the contours of his face.
âSalutations.â
Patton moved closer.
âGod forbid.â
The knees shifted together like a neatly crafted lattice.
âHi.â
âThis is a bad idea, isnât it?â Logan hummed, his face completely red.
âItâs a pretty good bad idea.â Patton offered, equally as nervous.
Loganâs hand came up to the side of his head, twirling a piece of Pattonâs hair. His face had gotten a bit closer.
âUm, we really shouldnât Patton.â
âBut we could.â Patton backed off a little, suddenly realizing what he said, âThat is if weâre thinking the same thing.â
âWe could be.â
Logan leaned back, running his hand through his thick brown hair.
âI mean, arenât teenagers supposed to..?â
âDo bad ideas?â
âYeah.â
He didnât even think about it. Pattonâs hands found their way to Loganâs waist, gripping the black fabric of his polo. Logan grabbed him by the collar of his letterman, his eyes wide and brimming with excitement.
âI mean, it's just a little mistake..â Patton mumbled, âJust a little mistake, please?â
Patton wouldâve told you he didnât know what he was in for, but he did.
âWell, then,â Loganâs hands tugged on his collar, âOops.â
Loganâs arms shot around his neck, and as Pattonâs settled on the middle of his back. To be perfectly honest and straightforward, they kissed. This was Loganâs first kiss, being a queer kid in Logansport didnât exactly settle well so his options were vague.
This was strange.
Patton hadnât exactly realized something. The way his heart rate sped up, or how fond of Loganâs looks he was. He figured this was just how people felt about their best friends.
His father would kill him, if he found out about this.
âIâm so sorry, I shouldâve asked!â Logan apologized, releasing Patton from his grip, âI know you donât swing that way.â
Patton pulled him back in, holding him in place.
âI donât. I really donât.â Patton started, âBut I mean, I kind of liked it.â
Loganâs eyes light up once more.
âUm, you did?â
âYeah! I did,â Patton laughed, âMaybe we could do that again sometime.â
âIâm free in the next second.â
Patton rubbed Loganâs tie between his fingers, feeling this unnatural sort of ache in his chest. He kind of liked it though.
âThatâs great! Oh-!â
I doubt youâd want to hear about those next 30 minutes, but it ended with them on the crappy roof outside of Loganâs window. Loganâs tie was gone, and he had Pattonâs letterman around his shoulders.
âI love you.â Patton said, staring at the dark night sky, âYouâre my best friend.â
Logan nodded and a silent pang of pain stung in his lungs.
âI love you too, dude.â
The words felt dumb and dishonest on Loganâs tongue.
âChris asked me out the other day.â Logan mumbled, âI think heâs a little dull but, it's not like I have many options.â
Patton nodded, a silent pang of jealousy stung in his throat.
There really isnât a resolution to this story. If youâre reading this, you know the jist.
They danced the same tango for years.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Though I realized something was never discussed, with our time coming to an end in less of a year or so.
Logan fell in love first, but Patton didnât until much later.
Loganâs feelings would somewhat fade into his early twenties, while Pattonâs would grow that bit stronger.
The void reminded Loganâs of his feelings, and Pattonâs new found freedom truly brought their feelings back into the mix.
Half the time, I canât remember who kissed who. Half the time, I feel some sort of remorse for something not quite there.
Our time together is ending, Ms. Mary. I say these things, and you never seem to see what they mean to me. Our time is ending, and Iâm scared.
Emptiness is the most consuming feeling, Iâm afraid.
Virgil: Hmm..maybe this one?
Virgil, quietly: Shit! Too far, too far!
Part one of the comic..
Hereâs the transcript..
Patton, thinking: Logan has really pretty eyes. Theyâre like melted dark chocolate. If you got the lighting just right, you might have been able to see the soft bronze sparkles in his eyes. He seems less tired when heâs-
Logan: Patton?
Patton: Huh?
Logan: Iâm boring you, arenât I?
Patton: You kidding me? I could listen to you talk for days!
Patton: Wait-
