Vintage matchbook cover for Grueny’s, the chain of roadside convenience stores founded in the 30s by iconic film star Baby Gruenwald, rightly famous for its pecan log rolls, pecan butter, pecan cigarettes, and novelty diaper products (including Diaper-in-a-Can and Oh, No, It's a Bloody Diaper!).

Stores were concentrated in the Southeast and Midwest, although operations were rumored to have existed as far west as Covenbridge County, Kansas (headquarters of the United Sisterhood of Witches and Cauldron Operators Union) and as far south as Tarhoop Parish, Lousiana.

A ban on open fires has been issued across Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands due to wildfire risks. 

The ban includes fireworks, burn barrels, air curtains, and tiki  torches. 

While the ban prohibits open fires, outdoor stoves are still  acceptable for cooking purposes. 

Crews continue to fight the Cameron Bluffs wildfire, which has  damaged a section of Highway 4 and forced its closure. The  timeline for reopening the road is currently unknown.

2. A man has been convicted of pushing a log off a cliff towards two kayakers on Jesse Island.

The kayakers were unharmed, but the man has been ordered to undergo a pre-sentence report with a psychological component.

3. The City of Nanaimo has received a $150,000 grant to support the creation of an area plan for the Woodgrove Urban Centre.

Forming an area plan for the Woodgrove Urban Centre comes as long-term residential development projects are envisioned for the 42-acre Green Thumb Nursery property, known as the Bowers District.

4. Patricia Dennis, a 12-year-old Canadian girl, is set to graduate from university with a degree in biomedical science.
