Travel tip #9: Hitchhiking is an option. [ Remember your towel. ]

I know everyone tells you not to. It is dangerous and you don’t know the people, language, or country but hey they have never been stuck anywhere. If your choices are walk for 5 hours through a salt plain desert or hitch a ride on a random car driving down the road, I’m going for the car. 

Or if you are stuck on a mountain while it is getting dark and your ‘hotel’ is 2 hours away by car, then I am hitching a ride. Just remember the dangers and be smart about it. 

Granted you should take into consideration the location, how hard it is to get to where you are going, and the availability of transportation. Every time I have hitchhiked it was because there was literally nothing else but walking. Now I love walking but sometimes it is safer to take the stranger over the elements. 

Plus you end up meeting cool people who will tell you stories or even invite you back to their house for a Chinese New Year Feast with the extended family. You never know. 

Travel Tip #3: You should camp.

I know, I know. Camping who wants to camp, but really you should bring a tent on a trip and camp at least one night. It adds a whole new level of fun. Most areas you visit will have somewhere you are allowed to camp and it cuts costs. 

The thing is that you should really pay attention to the weather forecast if you are going to camp. This is really important. If you end up camping and lets say a typhoon was coming... Well good luck. 

The things you should look out for if you don’t speak the language and want to camp is:

- Closed fairies, restaurants, temples, etc...

- People asking repeatedly if you are sure you want to camp.

- Public transport shutting down.

- No one can be seen.

- Having no way off the island and all the hotels booked full.
