Local beef output may triple by 2020
Beef production for local consumption will be increased up to 80% by the year 2020 to meet the rising demand yearly and to reduce dependence on imported beef.
Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said to date only 28-30% or a total of 170,000 metric tons of beef were produced locally each year while the remaining 70% were imported to meet local demand.
“It is also an effort to improve the food safety level for the nation as Malaysia is now facing difficulty to import beef supplies after one of its suppliers, Thailand, is now more interested to sell to China because they are offering a higher price compared to Malaysia,” he said after visiting the Johor Corporation’s (JCorp) Feedlot Project in Lubok Bakul Pagoh farm yesterday.
The ministry took steps to revive the feedlot project by appointing JCorp to manage 10 out of 21 projects nationwide as an alternative to increase domestic beef production, he said.
Tajuddin said JCorp, as a government-linked company and with its strength on management, finance and ownership of various companies, would help to raise beef production locally.
