hes genuinely a tragic ass character he makes me sad. theres a lot of implication of romulus (who primarily raised him) being sexually abusive. and you can see how it effects him further on as an older adult— his method of talking to logan and threatening him has an Off sort of vibe with it too— its pretty clear that the way he was raised taught him to behave a certain way, so when he is actually genuine in this first era its… haunted by his past. a huge thing for him is not beinf genuine to the point where he doesnt exist beyond the mask he’s put up. but the closest you get to him being genuine with logan and being angry is like haunted by the implications of how long he was abused by romulus (on and off over 50 years) bc he doesnt rlly get how to act towards Family. he begins to grow out of it eventually (read: they took it away from his character without actually exploring character development and healinf, but yk) but in his earlier days of interacting with logan specifically you can tell that its smth that he puts on for show as a way to cope.

its frankly very upsetting. and i dont think that behavior is what makes him a bad guy, what makes him shitty is that hes violent and aggressive and manipulative to everyone and doesnt really put in effort to change that. again i rlly do think hes worthy of a good redemption arc but the comics never really grant us one. theres a skip where he just becomes a little more… stable all the sudden after he shows up in all new wolverine. and i dont dislike how he’s portrayed there (much better than x factor ugh) but they DONT give us him actually working to be better and get over the masks he’s put up for so long.

and i think the way he was conditioned as a child is one of the reasons he gets along with laura and gabby.

logan had a bad childhood and was controlled and stuff as a young child but then he was, on the flip side, mostly alone for all of his teen years and into adulthood. the sort of “being used” that aki, laura and gabby face doesnt really start until he’s an adult, whereas akihiro and laura were born into it and didnt get that freedom (tho that freedom was traumatizing in a different way for logan) until they were into adulthood/had already been fully conditioned. and akihiro and laura actively try to keep gabby from being conditioned as well bc of it

like theres ofc trauma that comes from logan being mistreated as a child and living in the woods and being on and off captured— having to survive after he’s killed his father and watched his mother kill herself— but he’s not conditioned like laura and aki until he’s an adult. i mean he was conditioned as a child but he wasnt conditioned the way his children were until he was an adult, which i think changes how they are able to relate to one another

OH AND SOME MORE ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS I HAD AFTER COPY AND PASTING ALL THIS:

i think another big difference in the traumas of logan vs his kids is how obviously and hands-on they were manipulated and used as children, versus logans manipulations and being used were a lot more subtle until he was an adult. like as children, laura and gabby camw from facilities were they were activelt trained to be assasins. they were physicallt manhandled and abused. yes, theres stuff you can dive into about how that abuse was kind of… didnt seem like Abuse to them (esp in lauras case) but it was not a secret they were being used. as a child, akihiro was abused pretty obviously. id say his manipulations were a bit more shadowed than laura or gabbys but it was hands on and still training him, physically and mentally.

and then logans childhood is different— it is based on secrets and keeping him in the dark, and is heavily influenced by his mother being standoffish and him being chronically ill. rather than being trained to kill from a young age and being sheltered in the manner of facilities or violence, he was sheltered via The Times (lmao. 1800s amiright), absent parents, quiet manipulation and secrets, as well as chronic illness.

they all have abuse and severe childhood trauma and i am Not looking to compare which is Worse bc thats dumb. but its interesting to see how it differs from each other and how those differences effect their.. family dynamic. and this is just me talking fully based on comic canon facts, not diving into headcanons or coding or my personal interpretations/changes to the canon text.
