India LNG imports: Supply diversification reshapes procurement strategy amid Hormuz disruption
India's gas import strategy underwent a significant transformation during the first four months of 2026 as geopolitical tensions forced buyers to rapidly diversify supply sources. India LNG imports remained resilient despite a sharp fall in cargoes from the Middle East, with higher shipments from Africa and North America helping offset the disruption caused by the Hormuz crisis. According to available market data, imports from Africa nearly tripled while North American LNG deliveries surged by around 70%, demonstrating the flexibility of India's procurement strategy during one of the most volatile periods in recent energy markets. Indian Petroplus analysis indicates that the changing pattern of India LNG imports reflects a structural shift rather than merely a temporary emergency response.
The supply diversification came at a higher cost, with Asian spot LNG prices rising sharply as buyers competed for Atlantic Basin cargoes. At the same time, domestic gas production continued to decline, increasing India's dependence on imported LNG even as overall gas demand weakened. Industrial consumers, fertiliser producers and petrochemical companies experienced supply pressures, while priority sectors such as city gas distribution continued receiving relatively stable allocations. The crisis also encouraged greater coal usage in power generation as utilities sought alternatives to expensive imported gas.
Looking ahead, the future direction of India LNG imports will depend heavily on developments in the Strait of Hormuz and the pace of recovery in Gulf exports. Indian Petroplus analysis believes that continued geopolitical uncertainty could permanently strengthen India's procurement relationships with suppliers in Africa and North America, reducing excessive dependence on a single region while improving long-term energy security through greater diversification of India LNG imports, India LNG Imports, LNG Imports, India Gas Market, LNG Supply, Energy Security, Natural Gas, LNG Trade.
