I actually do have a bunch of faves, though I can give the top 2 with almost no thought.

#1 is clearly the Saltarello that started it all, found here. Julia and I used to entertain ourselves by sending back and forth medieval dance vids. She found this one and was like “omg it’s Quentyn.” Then we found the song in other places and called it the “Prince Mud theme.” That particular dance just makes me so happy.

#2 is my favorite in terms of the actual sound of the Saltarello, link here. It’s performed by Stary Olsa, and I’ve been using it to close a bunch of UBS episodes lately. It also used to be my ringtone, and true story: my friend once called me cause she was locked outside my building when I had people over; rather than answer the phone, everyone inside just started dancing to it, and it wasn’t til I got an angry text that I realized what happened.

The rest are going to be in no particular order, because it’s very hard to rank.

I’m actually going to give #3 to that video I posted two days ago. Those women dancing make me so happy, and there were a couple tags on it like, “me and the girls at a FUNCTION” where I couldn’t stop laughing. The whole video is really #mood. I want to request it for my wedding. (Honorable mention to this dance too though.)

 #4. The next is Saltarello II - Manuscrito de Londres - Artefactum, which is basically just everything a Saltarello II performance should be. It’s fast, the percussion is driving, and the instruments chosen blend well. There are A LOT of saltarellos on older instruments that are just plain painful to listen to. I might consider this one a bit of a conservative choice, but I can’t fault it in any way.

#5 is performed by Gilead (picks up after a minute). Honestly, everything Gilead does is a delight to listen to (their Sons of Skyrim is on my workout playlist). This Saltarello is nice and playful, without bastardizing the melody too much.

#6. While I’m digging into Soundcloud, there’s El 5º Pino - Saltarello 2013. I’m obsessed with this one. What the hell is it?? What is going on? It’s so strange but intriguing.

#7. Salterello (Codex Londinensis). I fucking love this video, and I don’t know why. It’s the complete nonchalance of the finger-drummer maybe? The quality isn’t amazing, but he’s my hero.

The YouTube credits on #8 are very vague, and I’m not 100% sure who the artist actually is. But. Stunning, majestic, bold. THAT BEAT. I’m done.

#9. This performance absolutely speaks for itself. Dramatically satisfying. 

#10 is Louis Bingham & Griselda Sanderson performing a duet with the best sounding medieval violin I’ve come across. This is also #friendship goals.

Bonus: someone performing Saltarello to “cups” (kinda), and using a Spongebob Squarepants cup no less.

ShowJon hanged a child plus 3 more people and got hundreds of soldiers killed due to his own stupidity. Arya murdered the Freys en masse. Daenerys burned the dothraki's holy place. You can't even say that Carol's retaliation was unpromped, since both her family, the Tyrells and the Faith were purposefully phasing her out of politics and Margaery was raping of her son. The show simply did not do a good job of highlighting Cersei's evilness compared to the so-called heroes

I had some other asks about Cersei, and this is a really succinct way of putting my feelings on it.

Like even blowing up the sept...here, I’ll just pull what we said from the retrospective:

“...from a character perspective, it seems as though this is the story of someone who had her back to the wall. Cheryl had no formal power and no one respected her, the one attempt to do something about this serious problem was a miserable failure thanks to the incompetence of Larry and Mace, and then to just keep piling on, trial-by-combat was outlawed, heavily increasing the chance of her…you know, fucking dying, by a whole lot.

We’re not trying to say mass murder is justified or anything, especially when fleeing was an option, but then add to this the strangle hold these horrible people have on TomTom and the crown, and it’s almost as if the Carol narrative was still going strong. Until she was gleefully sipping that wine and then ignoring her kid to go torture a septa, all while claiming she was a hedonist, which had literally never been in evidence before.”

Again, it’s not like her actions are free-of-problems, but contextualized against the violent revenge literally EVERYONE takes in this show, why is hers so much worse?

I’m assuming a Zelda PoV would be too like… Ya know, the reason Martin won’t give us the PoV of kings. But holy shit she destroys me with her time as Sheik. Ditto there can’t really be a Ganondorf or Rauru. Alright, so:

[Note, this is the relationships that I personally am interested in and is thus a mix of canons because they’re all a little jumbled up in my head, but I hope this still brings some truth to your eyes]

Ami/Usagi somehow ended up capturing my entire heart, from day 1, ride or die, all eggs one basket. The way I look at it, it’s a beautiful karmic balance between the one who needs to give affection and the one who needs to receive affection. And they’re both the most incredible sweethearts to grace this earth. Hungry? Usagi made you cookies! Cold hands? Ami surprised you with handmade mittens! Ignore the sword cuts in the fabric! She was going through a rough patch and a couple of angel tears will make it as good as new! 

Rei/Minako didn’t grab me until I watched PGSM, but then it grabbed my by the collar and rooted through my pockets for loose change. They flirt by trying to be better than each other, and by “better than” I mean “good enough for.” And, in this competition to become The Best, they must also become the Nicest and the Kindest and the Most Affectionate they accidentally as a byproduct improve themselves as people. Oops!

Haruka/Michiru I need to mention, for obvious reasons. Of course, their canon relationship is beautiful and perfect and is perhaps best exemplified by the matching outfits like those pictured below. But also, these two had a massive impact outside the series itself. Probably every single LGBT+ person around my age that I know, Harumichi was a formulative moment of girls loving girls and presenting masculine or feminine while doing it. They are truly baby’s first gays.

Mako/Ami (while it’s no Ami/Usagi) is also very important to me. If Reinako is constant intensity, then Makoami is pure chill. They both have a deep, deep caring streak and I’m struggling to think of a word to describe their relationship besides “soft.” Additionally, I love the tall gf/small gf dynamic. Ami is the perfect size of a dance partner. (Actually, I think this scene is exclusively responsible for my investment in MakoAmi.)

At number five, I have to go against my immediate Ami/Usagi instincts once again and bring forward Rei/Usagi. Usagi sees the vulnerable side of Rei, something that not many people are allowed to see, and instead of teasing her about it, she nurtures it. And, you know, Rei is always fighting, but it’s not because she’s mean-spirited; it’s because she’s found something worth protecting. She’ll always defend Usagi, even if it’s from Usagi herself.
