The idea of Lost Girls came to me about two years ago, in bits and pieces. At the time, I was in the middle of a horrible writing slump that I didn’t think I could ever get past. I had been trying to work on what I intended to be my novel at the time, Paper Hearts. But, I was also not in a good place at all mentally or physically, so writing was a challenge. I remember thinking that I felt so lost, that I didn’t know if I would ever get past this and feel whole again.

I guess that feeling, the feeling of being lost, is what sparked the idea for Lost Girls. But I was still too anxious, still too depressed, to do anything with it. I started RPing with a friend of mine and making Pinterest boards, and gradually, the characters began to develop. Before I knew it, I had three (and then four, and then five, which is what I have now) girls that were just as lost as I was, and needed me to tell their story. I grew very fond of these characters, and they quickly became my best friends, my beacons of light during that dark time.

I felt that there was a lack of mental health representation in the media, and so I decided to do something about that. Writing Lost Girls has been and continues to be therapeutic for me.

the secret history 🏛: how close are you and your group of friends? how far would you all go to protect each other? how many languages do you speak?

I used to have a tight-knit group of friends in high school, then a loosely-knit group in undergrad, and now we’re all over the country and I’m making new friends in my cohort. My BFF is in Austin and I miss her so much.

We are all somewhat feral artists and most of us are queer, so we’d go pretty far. 

I am a native English speaker, know a little bit of conversational Spanish, I can read some Italian and speak it slightly less well thanks to 2yrs of university language classes, and I know a bunch of Yiddish slang. I toyed with learning Romanian once upon a time, and I know a smattering of words in various romance languages. The cool thing about romance languages is that if you know one, you can get the gist of a bunch of them.

homer 📖: is it more important to be brave or to be kind? do you like to read?

Kindness is a form of bravery, don’t you think? Especially nowadays.

leaf 🍁: what is your favourite season? what is your favourite comfort food?

It’s fall. I am a sweater and boots fiend. Come late September I emerge from my casual goth cocoon and bloom into a cozy basic layered pseudo-goth.

daisy: what inspired you to create your OC? i knew i wanted everly to have a bestie, and somehow vega came to me fully formed in her armor and everything. i wanted to have a lady warrior who is still into certain girly things things like gowns and her hair. she isn't afraid to express herself and is fierce at all times. 💁‍♀️

daffodil: is your OC likeable? well i think so! vega is charming and extremely loyal. she's also a "life of the party" kind of person, which works well because everly is a little more reserved and introverted.

petunia: when was the last time your OC cried? i honestly haven't thought about this! the main plot of the story is that they're trying to break a one hundred year curse on their kingdom, and a lot of destruction happens during that time. so i imagine there are many tears there. but specifically related to vega? idk, she takes care of the horses and animals still remaining on the castle grounds, so the last time she cried would probably be if something happened to one of them. 😭

Genre: horror

What first piqued my interest: I’m not 100% certain about the status of this one, but I hope it’s still around because that mood board = 😍, and I’m really excited about the worldbuilding!

What I want to learn more about: Alys’s life as a pitchpuller sounds fascinating, and I want to know all about it! Also, the ocean is clearly home to something mysterious and terrifying and destructive, and I want to know what happens when Alys and co. have to face it down.

What I’m excited about: Alys’s mission and her ship are both filled with really interesting mysteries and conflicts. I’m excited to see how they all play out—and, of course, what happens when they reach the surface.

19. What’re you excited about for next year?

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hopefully finishing soabm’s second draft? It is Hard To Say. If not for wishful thinking, I’d say the possibility of finally finding a friend group I can feel a part of if uni comes back in the fall.
