Title: Just Best Friends
Genre: Fluff?
Description: Dan has no idea that he likes Phil. He assumes itâs just how best friends feel since he hasnât ever had one before Phil. Starts with cereal thieving! A zoo visit may be involved.
Chapter One
Dan woke up to sun streaming through the window. He blinked, mumbled a few curse words at the bright light, and put a pillow over his head in a futile attempt to go back to sleep. After a few fruitless minutes of tossing and turning, Dan got up. He stumbled into the kitchen to get breakfast, only to find that Phil had eaten the last of his cereal.
The day was not starting out well for him.
âPHIL!â Dan knew that Phil didnât eat it to be mean, but he was still waking up and the fact that his cereal was gone made him irritated.
Soon enough Philâs dark head of hair peaked around the doorway. âYes?â
âYou ate all of my cereal again. Now what am I supposed to have?â Dan exclaimed, holding up his empty box of Shreddies
âYou saw nothingâŚ..â Phil drew back from the doorway and Dan could hear his footsteps fade into the lounge. Dan sighed, put down the box and followed him. He found him sitting on the couch browsing Tumblr. Phil looked up, a slight smile on his face.
âAre you hungry?â he teased. Dan sat down and looked out the window. It was already ten and  the sun was shining even brighter, no clouds to be seen. Then he glared at Phil.
âWell seeing as someone ate all my cereal, yes Iâm hungry.â Â He growled.
Phil pretended to cower, but laughed. â Thatâs what best friends are for!â Then he changed his tone, âYou know I feel bad about that. How about I make it up to you by paying for brunch,  yeah? Itâs a great day, and I think youâre getting grumpy after being  holed up in the flat so long.â Dan paused, and crossed his arms like a tired three year old.
âFine. And I am not grumpy.â
An hour later, after hair straightening and getting lost on the way, the two finally sat down at a window seat in the new cafe Phil had heard of.
âAre you sure about this place?â Dan asks somewhat disgruntledly, as his stomach was growling loudly due to that morningâs cereal shortage. He jumped at Philâs touch on his shoulder. It was as if someone had given him an electric shock, which was something Dan noticed had been happening more often when Phil touched him.
âOf course I am! PJ told me about this cafe and the great breakfasts they serve. And I thought you might like the fact that itâs called Free Internet.â Dan smiled involuntarily at Philâs excitement.
Philâs eyes sparkled mischievously as he pumped his fist in the air. âHah! Thatâs the first time youâve smiled all day!â Dan immediately faked a frown, grumbling something about being mad at Phil.
âWhat did you say?â Phil was grinning even harder, and Dan was having a hard time pushing down another laugh. Phil had a knack for making him laugh, much to Philâs pleasure and his own displeasure. It was like Phil had a hold over him, even though Dan couldnât figure out why.
âI said, Iâm mad at you!â Just when Dan thought he couldnât hold the giggle in any longer, their food came. He jumped on it like a ravenous animal, because thatâs what he felt like at the moment. After a minute of steady forkfuls, Dan looked up to see Philâs untouched plate and smirking face.
âStop watching me! Itâs your fault Iâm this hungry!â That only made Phil laugh harder. Dan smacked his arm and focused on his eggs. He could feel a blush creeping up into his cheeks, so he said, âPhil, stop staring at me like a creep and eat your undeveloped chicken fetuses.â
Phil groaned but started eating. Â âWill you stop calling them that!â
Once they finished, they decided to walk around London. Dan teased Phil that it was only because he wanted to attract more crazy people to talk about in his next video. Thatâs when he realised that it might sound to other people like he was flirting with Phil. Dan was lost in thought about this, and didnât notice the bus rumbling towards him.
Phil lunged for his arm. âDAN!â Dan felt himself be jerked backwards, and then felt a rush of air on his face as the bus passed right where he had been standing
âHoly Jesus, Phil, I almost died!â Dan breathed heavily. Phil looked shocked, but also excited.
âWhy are you so excited? Let me repeat, I. LITERALLY. ALMOST. DIED.â
âYeah, yeah. But did you see what was on the side of the bus?!â
âNo Phil, I was too busy ALMOST DYING.â Dan repeated dubiously, surprised and a little bit hurt that Phil didnât seem to care.
âWe should go to the Zoo! Itâs such a nice day, and they have lions! Thatâs what the advert said on the bus! â
Dan rolled his eyes, still a bit put out about how Phil was acting. âI bet everyone else has the same idea.â
âItâs a Wednesday. Besides, Dan, I bet they have llamas!â Phil knew how to get Dan, though Dan wondered why he gave in so quickly.
âFine. But if itâs crowded and they donât have llamas, youâll be sorry!â He threatened, holding up a fist.
Thirty minutes later, half of that time on Google maps and the other half complaining from Dan, they reached the front entrance to the London Zoo.
Phil was jumping up and down, looking so much like an adorable little kid that Dan couldnât help but grin. Then he realised that he had just called Phil adorable in his head. He knew it was the perfect adjective to describe Philâs personality, but it felt different this time. Confused, Dan pushed back the weird feeling in his stomach and put on a grumpy face.
âYouâre paying since it was your idea.â
They walked around the zoo, which was fairly empty, proving Phil right. Dan eventually loosened up, because who canât resist a trip to the zoo? One of his favorite parts was when they got to the lions. Phil was elated, and he asked Dan to take a picture of him with the lions. They stayed there until Dan finally warned, âPhil, Iâm going to find the llamas with or without you.â He started to walk away, but soon heard footsteps running up behind him. It pleased Dan that Phil didnât want to be without him, for a reason Dan chalked up to not wanting to be alone in the zoo himself.
âI want to be there so I can take a picture of your face when you see them.â
It ended up with Phil asking directions from one of the zookeepers because Dan was too embarrassed to ask himself. The woman pointed towards the enclosure, smirking at Danâs obvious excitement, making his already red face a shade of deep crimson.
âAww Dan, donât be embarrassed, she just canât handle your man-childness!â Dan hit Phil on the arm in protest but quickly pulled back. He couldnât think of a good comeback. After an awkward silence, they finally came upon the llamas. Dan turned to ask Phil to take a picture, but he was already filming his reaction.
So Dan pointed, smiled, and exclaimed. âLlamas, Phil, look!â
âI see them Dan.â Phil was grinning from ear to ear. No matter how much Phil irritated Dan, he just could not resist a smile from him. He couldnât deny that Phil was definitely his favorite person. So much for being mad at him, Dan thought, then sighed.
Thatâs when he noticed how ominously dark the sky had gotten.
