MWW Artwork of the Day (5/7/17) Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864-1901) Moulin Rouge: La Goulue (1891) Lithographic poster, 94 x 122 cm.
A poster for the famous Parisian night-club, announcing a Concert Bal every night and a Masked Ball on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The featured performer, Louise Weber (1866–1929), was a French dancer who performed under the stage name of La Goulue ("the glutton"). She also was referred to as the Queen of Montmartre, and is generally credited with inventing the can-can. Â
The Moulin Rouge (French for "Red Mill") is a world-renowned cabaret in Paris.  It was co-founded in 1889 by Charles Zidler and Joseph Oller, who also owned the Paris Olympia. Close to Montmartre in the Paris district of Pigalle on Boulevard de Clichy in the 18th arrondissement, it is marked by the red windmill on its roof. The closest métro station is Blanche.
It's best known as the spiritual birthplace of the modern form of the can-can dance. Originally introduced as a seductive dance by the courtesans who operated from the site, the can-can dance revue evolved into a form of entertainment of its own and led to the introduction of cabarets across Europe. Today, Moulin Rouge is a tourist attraction, offering musical dance entertainment for visitors from around the world. The club's decor still contains much of the romance of fin de siècle France.  (Wikipedia info)

MWW Artwork of the Day (9/18/16) Manuel Orazi (Italian, 1860-1934) La Maison Moderne (1902) Lithographic poster
Maison de l'Art Nouveau (House of New Art) was the name of the gallery initiated in 1895 by the German art dealer Samuel Bing in Paris that featured exclusively modern art. The fame of his gallery was increased at the 1900 Exposition Universelle, where he presented coordinated —- in design and color —- installations of modern furniture, tapestries and objets d'art. These decorative displays became so strongly associated with the style that the name of his gallery subsequently provided a commonly used term for the entire style.
Manuel Orazi was an Italian art nouveau illustrator and poster artist. In 1895 he created the Calendrier Magique which was an occult-themed calendar. It was limited to 777 copies and was made in collaboration with Austin De Croze. He also illustrated novels such as Aphrodite by Pierre Louÿs and Les Fleurs du mal by Baudelaire. He made jewelry designs that were displayed at Maison de l'Art Nouveau in 1896. In 1921 he designed the sets for the silent film L'Atlantide.

MWW Artwork of the Day (8/9/15) Paul Émile Berthon (French, 1872–1909)  Salon des Cent (c. 1894-1900) Lithographic poster
Berthon was a French artist who produced primarily posters and lithographs in the style of Art Nouveau, much like his contemporary Alphonse Mucha. He studied as a painter in Villefranche before moving to Paris and later enrolled at the Ecole Normale d'Enseignement de Dessin, where he received lessons from Luc-Olivier Merson. His study of the decorative arts influenced his print making, influencing the strong lines and natural details that guided his art. The vast majority of Berthon's lithographed posters did not include advertisements and were meant to stand on their own.
