everyone in the town of bellworth crossing knew lisa morales. from her first talent show performance of “hopelessly devoted to you,” it was clear she was destined for greatness. she proved it year after year, fearlessly taking lead after lead in the spring musicals. in the spring of ’77, her eleven-o’clock number brought the crowd to tears. sure, she had her secrets. but when you have the voice of an angel, no one cares if you’re kissing girls in your dressing room. to her parents, her mentors, and her castmates, she was the golden child—humble despite her enormous talent and the résumé to prove it. lisa is remembered as a star that burned out too soon: a household name in the making, a canary lost in the coal mine.

out of touch / childhood best friend. they had been the perfect pair from the moment they met in kindergarten. there had never been a question, only ‘yes, and’ following whatever the other came up with. lisa had been the only one who seemed to understand what they felt, who dared to see past the facade and the rumors, never shying away from the person beneath. though they changed and branched out as they grew, the two still held tight to their connection, determined to remain friends through anything life threw their way. they had begged lisa not to get involved with anything having to do with fort hemlock, knowing it couldn't lead to anything good. they hadn't expected it to lead to death.

under pressure / rival. it seems trivial now; friends turned sour thanks to ‘friendly competition’. two people who once saw themselves as a package deal ended up fighting tooth and nail to see the other fall. both wanted to be center stage in every aspect of their lives, only to end up side by side and compared every time—whether it was in the classroom, with friends, or most often, within the bellworth crossing high school theater department. the sourness between them purely came down to ego and pride, frustrated at the idea of someone else taking what they felt they were destined for. and yet, their over the top personalities consistently clashed. loudly. and mostly in public.

holding out for a hero / step-sibling. the idea of a blended family was never something either were particularly sold on. the last thing they wanted was to move in with their mother's new husband and his daughter the summer before sophomore year, especially when the daughter in question was one of the loudest people they had ever met. navigating their new found step-siblinghood had been tricky, rocky at best, but they found a steady beat within time. somewhere along the line, they figured one another out and started to see the other as family. when their father's secretive job at fort hemlock produced concerning questions, lisa had been by their side in looking for answers, more than willing to search for what terrified others.
