ā„The Philosophy of the Slow Burnā„
I was sitting at my āhearthā today, working on a simple abundance spell. Nothing crazy. A green candle. A copper offering bowl. A piece of parchment off to the side, waiting for me write my intention. The scent of burning incense filled the room. Just a quiet moment to ask the universe for a little steadiness and support in my often chaotic life.Ā
Usually, my work is a bit more⦠liminal. Iām used to the quiet company of spirits and energies - visitors who come to me more often than I go out seeking them; the restless, often heavy shadows of the crossroads.
My 10 year-old son wandered in to see what I was doing, lingering the way kids do when something is a bit unfamiliar but piques their interest at the same time. He was curious. A little spooked, but curious.
Heās at the age where curiosity and unease of the unknown sit side by side. Part of him was fascinated, part of him was a little creeped out. And I canāt say I blame him. Heās grown up surrounded by the same imagery and rhetoric we all have: church sermons, movies, videos, Halloween decorations that tie witches to spookiness, horror, and darkness. Generational trauma that feels like itās been woven into our very DNA over the centuries, an almost innate, knee-jerk reaction that tells us witchcraft and magic are things to be feared.
Spirit Work Question
How does one calm a pack of coyote spirits? I bought a pretty large amount of bones from an Etsy seller and they came to me feeling very agitated and scared. I want to calm them, and show them that theyāre safe, but Iām not quite sure how to do that. Iāve given them an offering of some fresh water to drink, but aside from that Iām not sure what to do.
Hi everyone! I'm a brand new witch on the scene, looking to make some friends and mentors! I've been doing spells on my own (and without documentation) for ~2 years now, but I'm looking into defining my craft and practicing consistently!
Some areas of witchcraft I'm particularly interested in include:
Liminal witchcraft
Musical witchcraft
"Local witchcraft" (becoming a witch of a locality, not witches in my area)
Animal witchcraft and therian/otherkin witches
But I'm looking for all kinds of friends and contacts! I'm so excited to meet everyone!!
Please reblog if you fit any of these categories so I can find you!
The Liminal Witch
Thereās always some subconscious desire to label ourselves.
You donāt need a label. Everything you need is in your countenance alone.
And I suppose I never went looking for one. Thereās never been a label for me. I gave up on the idea of fitting anywhere a very long time ago.
I am invisible on my family tree, baring neither my father nor my motherās name. One is dead, and the other is in such deep shit that not even the government will confirm my relation to them.
I am invisible in my community, having been chased out of standard living quarters as an immigrant-become-political-prop, and onto wheels.
But even within the nomadic community, I am still invisible: I donāt come from a lineaged ethnic nomadic background, such as the Romani or Irish Travelers. I am a lone oddity.
I am invisible in the queer community because I am closested/averse to a relationship for a reason that I have literally never seen discussed anywhere, at all, in my entire life: abuse by the same sex.
I am invisible.
I have heard so many people say I am not real to each other, oblivious that I am standing right beside them, that I have begun to flicker in and out existence. It is entirely possible that when the lights come back up, I will no longer be here. I canāt tell you for sure.
Liminality is not an idea, or a aesthetic to me. It is where I live. Most of my life has been spent with a person who doesnāt exist on paper, in a house that groaned in the night, under the blinking lights of rest stops, sometimes documented, sometimes not, the only one on earth who bares my name, and yet dispersed into nothingness under the shuffle of society.
Witchcraft is one of the only things I have ever found that has a place, or even a concept, for people like me, who sometimes do not exist.
My favorite deck (mine own aside) is the Ceccoli. It was never supposed to be a tarot deck. And it isnāt an RWS. It is also not a Thoth. It is also not a Marseilles. It is also not an oracle. It is nothing. Except the Ceccoli. You cannot learn to read it in any book, and yet you also cannot read it without any knowledge. You can only read it if it lets you. It is a liminal deck. It exists in no system, and yet in all of them.
The only entity I have ever felt connection to is Lilith. I watch people on Tumblr and elsewhere speak of how difficult ā even cruel ā she is. It isnāt true. She acts that way because people treat her as things she is not, summoning her simply to try to sexually subjugate her, or alternately to give her worship ā an act she finds disdainful. She is not a god. She is not a demon. She is not a person. She is not a spirit. She is none of these things, and when she broke from the slavery of Eden, she also broke from the hierarchy of the heavens. She is Lilith, and she is a liminal being. She is nothing, and everything.
I always found it curious watching people here talk about how special liminal spaces felt. And I could of course relate to the fact that they feel immediately different. But they arenāt strange to me. Itās the rest of the world thatās strange.
Places where time and space shift ā in the woods at night on my little house on wheels, in abandoned warehouses, feeling the pitter pat on my bed from my long-deceased companion, in my own erased and buried history ā feel more certain, more homey, more linear, than places where other people live. I donāt understand how to be a person, after all these years of not existing. Time wobbles when I am at parties. Space collapses when people want to hug me.
I have finally found my label.
I am a liminal witch.
And when you visit liminal spaces, you enter my home.

I love the magical, don't get me wrong, and being connected to it is a fantastic experience, but if this godsdamned paranoia could calm itself the fuck down that would be great. I don't like feeling like there's things living in the shadows and in the corners of my vision that exist only to mock me and mess with my head. And I mean that's probably not fair to them but I'm an easily spooked bastard so it's just not a great time so I'd like it if whatever the fuck that likes to hang around me could give me the courtesy of at least saying hello. I would really appreciate that.
I can deal with spirits at my altar and at cemeteries, I don't exactly like being followed around by them elsewhere.
