I JUST started focusing on folk witchcraft (with paganism as a root) and one thing I wanted to do was start exploring the nature around me. I live in a city, but it turns out there are some nature reserves! Big ones too!
I went with two intentions: Find a wand (if I had the forest’s permission) and to meet the guardian spirit. I looked for the wand for a while and found one, then realized I hadn’t actually ASKED to meet the forest spirit. So I asked. And kept walking.
Less than a minute later this deer came out of NO WHERE directly behind me on the path. We looked at each other for a long moment and I could tell this was the spirit revealing themself to me.
I stayed with that deer for like, 15 minutes (at a respectful distance, don’t interact with wild animals folks even if they seem harmless!!)
Then, a few yards up the trail, I find this
Like, are you kidding me? This is a shrine 100%. I left the spirit a birch twig I had found and asked to keep. White birch bark is very special to me (it connects me to my paternal line) so it felt like a good offering.
I will absolutely be going back and OFTEN to leave offerings here. (Only things that won’t hurt the reserve!)

I woke up to messages on facebook from people in my town, apparently, they all started talking that I'm the local town witch. 🤣🤪 (they said its thanks to my constant collecting of pretty rocks, my crow feeding trays and my garden full of sage, purple and green, mugwort, rosemary, ect. And thanks to my kids telling everyone I'm a witch 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️)
Even got one message about being commissioned to make a prayer box for odin for someone.

So there's a little stream I cross over when walking at a nearby park, and I got a little curious just now as to where the stream comes from. So I followed the little bugger on Google Maps and found the river it comes from, the lake that the river comes from, and the creek that the river turns into, and followed the creek all the way through it dead ending in some farmer's backyard. AND I found that it crosses under a covered bridge in the area??? Which I didn't know was there?? So I'm gonna have to go check THAT out at some point.
AND ALSO THERE'S A WHOLE ASS CEMETARY LIKE A QUARTER MILE FROM HERE THAT I NEVER KNEW ABOUT???
Bruh, get your ass on the map website of your choice and follow the water in your area. It's a trip and a half. That was a fun way to spend a few minutes, and now I have some local destinations to check out.
My plan to become the local cryptid witch (I prefer "Mage" but that's Irrelevant).
Buy a plot of land that's wooded and some distance away from other homes but no more than 30min by bike from one specific small town (need to be able to sell your wares at the weekend market)
Build a cabin, cottage, or victorian mansion with either a whimsical, feral, or creepy aesthetic (I'd personally like a feral cottage)
Set up ritual areas all around the property with homemade statuary, tree groves, fire pits, fountains, moss, and whatever else you think would benefit the feel of these spots and dedicate each to something of your craft/practice
Plant herbs around trees in the woods and mark the trees with cryptic signs, but make it look purposeful, and actually collect from and tend these mini gardens.
Put a rugged barbed wire fence around the property but gap the wires so teenagers can still craw through.
Make masks to wear around the property, while gardening and foraging. And wear face paint or make up when in the ritual areas.
When shopping or at the market dress how ever you like (I like hippie and punk) but always get dodgy when someone asks where you're from
Setup a creepy wooden mail box at the edge of your property but never use it (get a POBox and handle your mail on the weekends)
Make a point to volunteer in town regularly, and learn names (never know who might trespass in the woods)
Never wear the clothes your wear to town at home, and wear a cloak with your at home clothes
Bike everywhere but have a car for long trips or know someone in town who can give you a lift to the bus park
I'm personally gonna do it living zero waste and off the grid (biofuel generator, solar panels, and/or (creepy) wind turbines)
HALLOWEEN: go to town as "the witch from [address]" during regular outings, then spend the 3 nights of Halloween mostly outside, working and celebrating like only a witch can.
