I figured out I was Pagan about a month ago, and the circle I went to at Fort Jackson explained some of the gods but not all of them (due to yule and we only had an hour each week), I was wondering though, is it disrespectful to the gods to pray for their help and guidance without knowing specific names? I did apologize for that, and I promised to give them the proper respects once I knew to whom to pray to and how, but I still feel like I had disrepected the gods in my ignorance
As long as you were respectful, I highly doubt that you’ve offended anyone. :)
Something that might be useful: in the case of a lot of deities (of those I’m familiar of, at least), the names we use aren’t actually their ‘true’ names. in Kemetic tradition, there are also a bunch of epithets we use as well as/ instead of names - ie, “Lord of Storms”, “Before whom the sky trembles”, for Set. An epithet is a short statement that describes an attribute or function (in this case, of a deity), and can easily be used in cases where you aren’t sure of a deity’s name. Example: something like “God/s of (insert place)” can be used as a sort of neutral epithet in the place of a name if you’re unsure.
