Dance to the Beat of the King
Do you know that feeling you get when you hear a single beat from a music that passes through your ears and pulsates from your veins all the way to your body? It is like having an alarm clock that is designed to wake you up from your sleep. Whenever I hear an exciting music, my nerves automatically send a signal to my brain that would make me move my head and step in unison with the music. From then on, I knew that I’d be into dancing.
I could still remember the old kindergarten days where the whole class were tasked to perform an intermission number for the recognition celebration. It was my first shot for I was given the responsibility to choreograph at a very young age. It did not require much but I was so nervous and excited. So I taught my classmates the routines to the tune of Chocolate A Choco Choco by Soul Control. The steps were plain-vanilla (stomping, clapping, jumping, and turning around) but everyone was entertained to see the whole class dance and perform.
Dancing has motivated me to do well with my studies since then. I entered our school’s dance club. I’ve been to many different dance competitions. I tried different dance genres: cheerdance, folkdance, cultural dance, interpretative dance, contemporary dance, modern dance, and hip hop. I just loved dancing so much that I can already see myself as a dance devotee.
Why am I dancing? Dancing enabled me to express myself. I am challenged in every competition. I loved the cheers from the crowd. I loved wearing cool costumes. And I liked being praised. But will it be like this forever? Will I keep on performing and competing with and for the world?
It is stated in the Bible, from 1 Peter 4:10-11, “God has given each of you a gift from His great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory to Him forever and ever! Amen.” The moment I came to know the Lord, bit by bit, things were clear to me. God revealed to me that my existence was for such reason – to serve the Lord’s great Kingdom in ways the Lord has enabled me. I believe that dancing is one of the multiple gifts that God has bestowed upon me. Since then, I said “Yes” to God and allowed Him to move mightily in my life.
Now, I am part of a Christian church where I am not just a church goer but a member of a family. I am also being trained and equipped in knowing more of God and serving Him. I am also serving God through the secondary ministry which are the King’s Kids Ministry and Dance Ministry. I have learned that dancing is not just about competing. It is not about how good you are. It is not about the steps. It is not about getting a certain place on the floor. It is not about myself but always about God. I am no longer dancing for the world but giving my all unto God – enjoying each step along the way.
I am not saying that dancing for the world and competing against other dance crews is a bad thing. I’ve been there and I know just how good it feels. But dancing with a purpose is such an honor and privilege to bring glory to the source of all things.
Dancing for the world is something but dancing to the beat of the King is one special thing.
