ย ย Two and a half things about Sergei Dragunov.
ย ย One: he does not suffer fools gladly.
ย ย This is why he pays heed to the group of three teenage boys squatting on the side of the park path for longer than half a second. Whatever they are snickering about cannot be good. He keeps his footsteps light, demeanor casual, and grip on a bulging plastic bag tight to his chest, coming closer without alerting them to his presence. He peers between them.ย
ย ย A naked, pink thing writhes in the dirt. Saliva glistens on its bare skin. One of the boys snorts another load of loogie.
ย ย Two: Dragunov likes birds.
ย ย He grabs the boy by the back of his jacket and throws him back, sending him sliding on his ass on the pavement hard enough to pull his pants down. The others scramble to their feet, are about to say something insightful and poetic about Sergei's mother, but meet his gaze, a glare as sharp and frigid as glacier ice, and make their only good decision for the day. They run, their compatriot stumbling over his own trousers.
ย ย Dragunov grunts. Beating them would only be a waste of his skills.
ย ย Kneeling, he gingerly cups the hatchling. It's smaller than his thumb, eyes bulbous, black, and shut tight. The trees around him still have their leaves, orange and gold they may be. He can't see a nest.
ย ย Zero point five: he does not always think things through.
