Jonathan's line in the epilogue about the light needing more diffusion has always struck me as something with a deeper meaning.
What is light diffusion?
Light diffusion is the dispersal of direct light through a medium to create a softer radiant light. This might involve the use of a diffusion panel made of something like nylon grid cloth
or a filter placed over a lens.
Essentially we're talking about a beam of light being dispersed by a medium into many weaker beams of light, providing a softer glow
While light diffusion is obviously widely used in filming, in Stranger Things, diffuse light is most commonly used with Will Byers who, especially in S4 and S5, is often depicted in a soft golden glow.
When light isn't diffused, it appears on film as harsh, providing bright lights and harsh shadows on the picture. This technique is notably used in a key Byler scene from S2
It looks like an interrogation and implies the reveal of a naked truth to the reader.
So why does Jonathan say the light needs to be more diffuse?
The diffusion of light is associated with Will (and Bylers have long associated it with Mike's gaze upon Will), but maybe there's something to be said about artificiality; about truth versus verisimilitude; about (#metagate) the making of the show finding its way into the action of the show.
Maybe there's also something about the harsh lighting being too focused and Mike/the audience being too focused on El (the Mage of Light in the epilogue campaign) to see the bigger picture. Or that El has (sorry) refracted herself through the explosion to pass through a medium into a more complex and all-seeing state?
Of course, we can't talk about light diffusion/refraction and not mention
that it's a really nice way to get a rainbow.
