Globally, Chile is one of the countries with highest taxes in books, a situation that is reflected in low rates of consumption of reading material. This, obviously, has generated a series of demonstrations against these measures. For this reason, a group of citizens have taken matters into and created the site www.librossiniva.cl, which pretends to expose the Chilean situation and make changes.

Until 1976, books were exempts of taxes. However, Pinochet’s dictatorship took care of not only burn and vanish books, otherwise included a tax, currently of 19%.

A lot of Chileans considers books are expensive, arriving at the end of purchase it in other countries, like Argentina or other places of the world, where the taxes are low or just does not exists. After 17 months of campaign, this initiative has over 76 thousands signatures in support of a big social and cultural need.
