Technology Programming

"Technology-based programs, with high appeal to youth, can help public libraries build developmental assets in youth in our communities. By doing so, we establish libraries as key partners with schools and families in building strong and safe communities. Library staff leading technology programs can be those additional supportive adults that youth need in their lives. Regular programming for youth, whether weekly or monthly, provides a structured opportunity for exploration as well as social and intellectual development." (Nelson and Braafladt 10).
Before planning any technology programming, it is important to understand the role that technology already plays in the daily lives of children and teens. TheĀ Technology in the Lives of YouthĀ page explores technology expectations and milestones for different age groups, challenges that technology presents, and additional resources.
The Importance of Digital Literacy for Youths
Public and school libraries have restructured their standards in regard to technology. In the past ten years, there has been a dramatic shift in how libraries obtain information which makes digital literacy skills vital to youth. Elementary school students learn keyboarding at earlier ages. Public libraries now have their catalogues online and on computer servers instead of a card catalogue; while more and more reference resources are imbedded in online databases. However, since we are now a part of the digital age, more and more youth learn from technology. Children utilize Web 2.0 applications to communicate with their friends and use tablets to read or listen to music. In the school and public library setting, technology programming addresses those needs.
Many āold schoolā librarians might be hesitant to use technology in their libraries due to its rapid evolution and expansion. Walton-Hadlock (2008) looks at the different types of programs for different age levels in technology. The reasons to use technology are about instruction for the kids (including motor skill development) but also help parents understand it as well. Plus, kids love to use technology because itās fun (52).
Although a toddler as young as two years old may be too young to incorporate technology, this is the time to give instructional guidance to parents. These programs are implemented to inform parents on eliminating television for kids at this age. Also, the child could use any electronic toy but the parents should be involved as well (53).
For younger children between the ages of 8 and 11, the use of technology is prevalent and more commonly used for gaming. The purpose of technology programming at this age is for socialization. Gaming can be popular for this reason because it can ignite competition and cooperation. Plus, the importance of gaming can be a great way to get different generations involved, especially when the games involve teamwork or appropriate at multiple age levels (54).
Technology programs can be sometimes be implemented at a modest cost due to the donation of volunteer time and games. However, a library program that has a reasonable budget for technology could invest in different gaming systems and other technological hardware like tablets or smartphones. It is important to realize that libraries can implement many technology programs without significant material donations and a large amount of funding for technology. In the article, Walton-Hardlock cites some prime examples of using Web 2.0 technologies in the library. At a library in Minnesota, youth learned some basic 2.0 skills on blogging while getting additional experience in typing posts (55).
Technology is not going away and should be embraced rather than avoided. Libraries have great opportunities for growth by leveraging technology and technology programs. The most important thing is to instruct parents and youth about the usefulness of technology and how to use it safely and effectively.
The best technology programming will utilize the technology the library can afford and programs that youth enjoy due to its connections to their interests. However, by focusing on programming, libraries reach beyond merely providing access to technology and expand to fostering life skills.
The Impact of Integrating Technology Programming
Classroom instruction and learning can be enhanced by utilizing the support that digital technology provides.A study on two iPod apps demonstrated an average 20% improvement in vocabulary skills by children aged 3-7 when using the Martha Speaks: Dog Party app. (Rockman et al., 2010) Providing schools with computers increases the technology skills of both teachers and students. By utilizing laptop programs, schools increase student engagement with academic work as well as improving both technology and writing skills. (Zucker & Light, 2009)
Examples of Technology Programming
Coding:
Scratch has strong appeal with youth and teaches them basic computer programming skills in a fun way. Children can build basic animations by using the Scratch programming that fits together visually like LEGOĀ® blocks. The book, Technology and Literacy: 21st Century Programming for Children & Teens, offers a chapter with Scratch workshops and is a valuable source of technology programming information. It is listed in the professional resources below.
Another great website to teach children and teens how to code isĀ Codeacademy. This website's main goal is to provide free coding education for everyone who wants to learn how to code. Children and teens can learn how to code in Java, HTML/CSS, PHP, Python, Ruby, and APIs. Ideally, children and teens can sign up on Codeacademy on a library computer, and teach themselves how to code. Coding is usually best learned individually, because every child has different experiences coding and learn at different rates. However, if you would like to have a weekly educational program at your library, Codeacademy also provides a free toolkit to start an after school programming club. Finally, patrons or librarians can sign up to teach on Codeacademy if they have proficient coding skills and want to share them with others in the Codeacademy community.
Movie Editing:
If a library has iPads and apps such as iMovie, this can be a great way to engage teens as they can record their own videos clips and edit them into movies or movie trailers. The technology programming offered by the library can begin at the stage of learning the youth are at and show them the next step in expanding their knowledge and improving upon their previous work.
A specific example of a movie editing program you can create in a school or public library is having patrons create aĀ 90 Second Newberry Film. Every year, author James Kennedy encourages people of all ages to create a 90 second film adaptation of their favoriteĀ Newbery award-winning book. The rules include:
The videos must be 90 seconds, but you are free to bend this rule if the movie is magnificent
The video has to be about a Newbery award-winning or a Newbery honor book
"No book trailers! No video book reports! We're looking for full-on dramatizations, with mostly child actors, that manage to tell the entire story of the book in 90 seconds." Basically, make it fun!
Videos should be uploaded to a website like YouTube or Vimeo, and submitted to kennedyjames [at] gmail [dot] com. Subject line: 90 Second Newbery, and include any information about yourself.
When you send a link, James Kennedy has the right to post it on his blog and any other social media websites.
This is an excellent way to get kids and teens involved in all aspects of creating a film, such as script writing, directing, acting, and editing. All the library needs is a camera and simple movie editing software.
Photo Editing:
There are several ways for school and public librarians to include technology programming. For example, freely available photo editing programs found online, such as Picasa or GIMP (a more advanced image editor), would interest a wide range of youth. Hosting a photo editing workshop would be an interactive way to help young patrons learn. The librarian could have the youth take photos using digital cameras and load them onto the computers, and then introduce basics of the photo editing software. Allowing sufficient time for youth to manipulate the photos and ask questions (of each other or the librarian) is important.
An example of a passive program would be creating anĀ InstagramĀ for your library. Librarians can use Instagram to promote new materials, take pictures of programs, or encourage teens to take Instagram photos while at the library. Instagram is also an easy way to post photos on other social media websites such as Facebook. Instagram is free to use, and you sign up with an e-mail address. It's also the easiest and most basic photo editing program because it only adds filters to your photos with one click.
Teen Tech Volunteering:
If the community's teens have proficient computer skills, you can encourage them to volunteer as a "computer volunteer". Teen computer volunteers can be given responsibilities such as releasing print jobs, assisting children and other teens with basic Internet and Microsoft Office questions. This gives them an opportunity to fulfill community service hours, and they can add this volunteering program as work experience on their applications to college or their resumes.
Another Teen Tech Volunteering program is pairing a teen with a patron (child or adult) who needs help learning how to use their smartphone (such as Android, Apple, or Windows phones), e-reader (such as a Kindle or Nook), or any Apple Product such as an iPad, iTouch, or iPod.
A specific example of a teen tech volunteering program is the Teen Tech Squad in Hennepin County, Minnesota, by Cythia Matthias and Christy Mulligan. In 2006, the Minneapolis Public Library hired four teen employees to lead technology programs for other teens and younger students. Each teen hosted a workshop typically on free, open source software. The program helped teen leaders develop their literacy skills, but more importantly created youth job opportunities within the community. Since 2006, the Teen Tech Squad as spread to three other library branches, and has widespread success. The article breaks down the Teen Squad's creation, projects, software used, and learning outcomes of the program.
Teen Tech Week:
Beginning in 2007,Ā Teen Tech WeekĀ is a YALSA sponsored event that occurs annually in March. According to their FAQ, "The purpose of Teen Tech Week is to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of digital media, especially the nonprint resources offered through libraries, such as e-books, databases, audiobooks, and social media". Libraries are encouraged to participate by providing special programs for teens and their parents, or simply encouraging patrons to visit the library and check out digital media that is available to them. There are a number of toolkits librarians can download or purchase to help plan and promote Teen Tech Week.
Word Collages:
Another example of a way to incorporate technology programming would be to mesh a class book discussion with an online program such as Wordle⢠or Tagxedo. The librarian can work with the students during a book discussion and help them collect a list of words related to the story. Then each child can create their own word cloud online using the words that they generated during class discussion. Tagxedo even allows them to choose a shape or a photo to create their word cloud in.
Electronic Gaming:
With internet access becoming ever more readily available, gaming is an increasingly social experience. Free online multiplayer games such as Minecraft and League of Legends can be used as the centerpieces for low-budget programs that require only computer and internet access. At a library event, players can connect online, trade items, collaborate on quests and battles, share tips, and show off skills. Library staff should take note of which online games are popular in their community.
Gaming consoles can be a one-time investment that gives back to the library through years of programming. Wii systems are ideal for young children, inexperienced gamers, and casual group play. Its motion-based interface means Wii play can encourage physical as well as mental activity. Titles such as Wii Sports, Mario Kart, and Super Smash Brothers offer short bouts of group play, making it easy to share among players. Xbox and Playstation consoles tend to be favored by more serious gamers, particularly (but not exclusively!) teenage boys. They may require more time and experience, but they are also more immersive and draw in skilled players eager to compete and show off skills. Competitive athletic games such as the Madden and Forza Motorsport titles have wide appeal. If a little violence is acceptable, first-person shooter games such as Call of Duty and Halo are popular with older teens. Classic group games such as Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band, though aging, still makes for fun diversions that involve lots of players and require little experience.
Makerspaces:
Makerspaces are "a space for people to come together to create, share, and collaborate." Many libraries are creating technology-driven makerspaces for young people. These spaces include tools for video editing, sound recording and remixing,, photography, design, game development, digital storytelling, image manipulation, 3D scanning, modeling, and printing, and robot creation. One example is in the recent popularity of the MakerBot, a 3D printer. The MakerBot is too expensive for most patrons to own one for themselves, but at the library they can use the MakerBot as well as the software that allows them to design they object they want to create. Staff can provide instruction and ideas, host programs including demonstrations and collaborations on project, and hold contests for MakerBot creations. Less expensive creative technologies are also available, such as theĀ MaKey MaKey, a digital invention kit that runs for about $50 and can be used in programming to foster creativity and technological literacy.
Using Devices:
Librarians can take advantage of the prevalence of of certain devices in their communities in creating programming. For example, many libraries have held "QR Code Scavenger Hunts." QR codes can be created for free online and linked to any website. Many types of smartphones are able to read the codes. Patrons can read the codes with their phones, which will lead them to catalog entries or online clues in the scavenger hunt. Tablets have been used in storytimes to provide interactive digital experiences that promote early literacy. Phones and tablets also offer a wealth of other apps that can be creatively implemented in any number of ways.

The YALSA Teen Space Guidelines "is a tool for evaluating a public libraryās overall level of success in providing physical and virtual space dedicated to teens, aged 12-18. Potential users of these national guidelines include library administrators, library trustees, teen services librarians, community members and job-seekers hoping to assess a libraryās commitment to teen services. Not every element of the guidelines may apply to every public library situation, but the guidelines can serve as a place to begin the conversation about what constitutes excellent public library space for teens." The guidelines focus heavily on the incorporation of technology into library and learning spaces, including broadly:
provide and promote materials that support the educational and leisure needs of teens
provide furniture and technology that is practical yet adaptive
ensure the virtual space reflects 21st century learning standards
provide digital resources for teens that meet their unique and specific needs
It's important to think about your library's overall technology collection and technology usage when planning tech-related programs. Knowing what works in your library's space with your resources will be essential to getting the most out of technology programming, as far as participation, engagement and enjoyment.
Webb, Allen, ed. Teaching Literature in Virtual Worlds: Immersive Learning in English Studies. New York: Routledge, 2012.
While you don't have to read this book cover to cover, the book is a valuable resource/guide for teachers and librarians who want to use alternative methods of teaching literature. Teaching Literature in Virtual Worlds is a collection of both high school teachers and college professors who created virtual worlds/projects to teach their students. Some examples are role-playing as literary characters online, exploring online interactive maps, and looking at museum websites to provide students context about the author's historical setting. Introduction
The Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) states that reference transactions are āinformation consultations in which library staff recommend, interpret, evaluate, and/or use information resources to help others to meet particular information needs.ā Both the Association of Research Libraries and the National Center for Education Statistics also include instruction of the use of these items in their definition ("Definitions of Reference"). Reference services for youth encompass these same basic definitions but have unique qualities of their own.

Youth Reference Services
Youth reference services encompassĀ readerās advisoryĀ as well as homework help and self-generated queries.Ā Homework assistanceĀ presents the difficulty of the āimposed queryā and the vast ages encompassed by the term āyouthā require special skills due to developmental needs. The question ofĀ censorshipĀ is at play with youth services as well. Youth services tend to be underrepresented in libraries, and these special circumstances cause many librarians frustration and an attitude of detachment. However, information literate youth become information literate adults, and positive experiences in a library will keep them coming back. As theĀ American Library Associationās (ALA) Bill of RightsĀ states in article V: āA personās right to use a library should not be denied or abridged because of origin, age, background, or views.ā A child or young adult's question, however ill-defined, has no less weight than that of an adult, and as stated by Bunge & Bopp: āEach question, no matter how routine, is of importance to the user who asks it, and that meeting the information needs of each library user is the goal of an effective reference service (7)."
Reference Design
There is a great deal of research that states that youth input for the design of resources is key. An obvious need is for reference desks that smaller children can see above. Additionally, having materials on lower shelves for children to browse is important as well. Indeed, RUSA and YASLA both require the inclusion of audience in planning (āGuidelines for Library Services to Teensā).Ā RUSA's Professional Competencies for Reference and User Services LibrariansĀ also discuss using focus groups to address information needs.
Collection developmentĀ strategies have to take into account what children and youth prefer. A reference librarian must vet the publisher, author and currency of informational sources for inclusion into the collection (RUSA's Professional Competencies). This integrated design need also manifests itself in the digital world.
The International Childrenās Digital LibraryĀ is an excellent example of taking the information seeking behaviors of children into account (Bilal 205). In a study of online reference interactions between librarians and teens, the teens attempted to personalize the interactions with idioms or emoticons (Walter and Mediavilla 221). This behavior indicates the teens' wish to take ownership and affect the way the transaction is carried out. School libraries need a way to increase student interest; having students create a space and integrate social media with research is a way to give them ownership of the space, and thus greater investment (Loertscher). Children have indicated that they prefer working at computers with one another, and social use of computer technology may breed more connections between users (Dresang 186, 192). Addressing the desires of children and teens will give them a sense of ownership and investment in library activities and resources.Ā Teen advisory boardsĀ can be very handy in these instances.

Access to Information
One component of reference services is providing access to and help with information sources. Accessing information has three important components: the right to, the means to, and the ability.
Right
TheĀ ALA Bill of RightsĀ addresses the right to use a library, regardless of age. Materials of use to children exist in print and online. ALA also has an opinion on Internet access, stating that Internet filters infringe on this right, regardless of competing view points on the topic. ALA encourages librarians, where able, to advocate for extending access and to teach youth the skills to safely use the Internet (āĀ Miors and Internet Activityā).
Means
According toĀ RUSAās Guidelines for Library Services to TeensĀ information and technologies should be as current as possible. RUSA feels incorporation of blogs, social networking and online homework assistance are required. They also suggest ultimately having 24/7 access available for reference services, possibly coordinating with state-wide electronic reference services where applicable to aid with staffing and coverage.
Ability
Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA)ās Teen Services Evaluation ToolĀ states that a proficient service to teens includes āinitiative to formally teach how to find, evaluate and use information effectively, using a variety of print and online tools.āĀ RUSAās guidelinesĀ agree, stating in article 5.3 that libraries should āGuide teens to be self-sufficient library users through example.ā Librarians and educators have a responsibility to educate younger children in how to effectively and safely search for information (Gross, Eaton et al.).
The Reference Interview
The most important component in a reference transaction is the reference interview. It is during this procedure that the patron develops their perception of you and the library based on your demeanor and performance. The reference interview is where you are tested as a professional and can make or break the likelihood of a patron's return to the library. RUSA identifiesĀ five main componentsĀ of a reference interview (Ward et al.):
Approachability
This step is imperative as it sets the tone for the entire interaction. The librarian or reference personnel must be welcoming and set the client at ease. Body language must be inclusive; eye-contact and smiling are vital. Roving librarians would do well to interact with patrons, much as a store clerk would, by asking if they might help them and if they are finding everything they need. RUSA has added āremoteā requirements for online interaction, and specifies that interactions should be jargon free.
Interest
A good transaction occurs because the librarian displays a great deal of interest in the query. All patrons deserve the same attention to detail and complete service (including children who may not be sure what they are asking for). To show interest, RUSA encourages facing the patron when speaking to them to focus one's attention. Again, eye contact, smiling and ascension through nodding are key. In a remote setting, the librarian must maintain contact with the patron by sending messages occasionally to indicate active listening. The librarian or the system must be constructed in such a way as to be timely. The remote librarian must also indicate resources on the web and turnaround time for each question.
Listening/Inquiring
Like interest, listening is an active role. The librarian must be kind and engaged with the patron. They can show they are listening by repeating questions back to the user, to confirm queries. The tone and language used must be appropriate for the situation and user. A child will not understand the same words as an adult, and this is an important specification. If a goal can be identified, this is the time to do so. The librarian may use open-ended questions to encourage patrons to expound on their topic. The librarian may also use closed questions to be certain they are retrieving the correct information. The librarian must not be judgmental, regardless of subject matter.
Searching
The librarian should maintain the line of communication so they are not repeating the clientās searches. This is a teachable moment. The librarian can explain why they choose certain sources, as well as engaging the patron in the search by showing them what they are doing and where to find materials. It is important to accompany the patron (at least initially) to be sure they find what they need. Remote reference transactions should take advantage of whatever technology is available to the patron to complete the transaction (e.g. web browsing, fax machines, email).
Follow Up
Finally, and possibly second only to component one, the librarian must follow up. They should ask a question as to whether the patron found the information they needed, or if they need anything additional. Without this step the librarian runs the risk that either a stunted transaction has taken place or completely mismatched information has been proffered. This includes directing the patron to other sources (in the library or without) that may be of further assistance. How can a professional measure the value of a transaction unless they know it has been successful? Why would a patron return to a librarian who has not helped them find what they were looking for? The follow-up is also the moment to encourage the patron to return, to show them you enjoyed assisting them.
Components Unique to Youth
Librarians must be aware of theĀ developmental stagesĀ of youth to use appropriate language and find appropriate materials (Bishop and Salveggi 367-358). The approachability is key, especially in young adult users (Curry 72). Many times adults still intercede for their children in self-generated queries. Much of the time these intercessions are to facilitate a successful transaction, but they may also be related to controlling what their children have access to. Regardless, most professionals feel that librarians should direct questions to the children whenever possible to maintain their involvement in the transaction. A librarian should not alienate the adult but interact continuously to clarify components with the child throughout the exchange (Gross).
Young adults are a severely underserved library population. According to a 2007 Public Library Association study, only 51% of public libraries have a full-time young adult services librarian (Braun, Flowers, and Hastler). However, teens are often struggling with key life issues and tender as well as judgment-free treatment is imperative. A study by Joanne Silverstein found that middle school students are just beginning to explore issues of health and mortality.
Self-Generated Query
In many ways the self-generated query is a straightforward reference transaction. The question comes from a place of interest to the youth. This means the youth will have context as to where the question originated. This puts the youth in an easier place to interact with the librarian to find information (Gross). However, there are still some challenges that working with younger users present in this scenerio.
Children
Kathleen Horning describes an interaction she had with a seven-year-old boy. He came to the desk on his own with a question. The boy stated he wanted geographic books. After further use of the interest and inquiring portions of RUSAās guidelines, she discovered he wanted books with the alphabet in them but with āmore wordsā. Then with more prodding, he described books about Pluto (the planet). When the librarian led him to the section in non-fiction the boy asked if they had books like that but about whales. She gave him a book about whales and soon after his father came into the department. The boy rushed up to him and declared:
Boy: āDad! I got one!ā
Father: āAbout whales? Letās see it.ā
Boy: [handing the book to his father and pointing at the librarian] āShe helped me find it.ā
Father: āAnd you asked her for help all by yourself?ā
Boy: [beaming] āYeahā (57-58).
This transaction reveals quite a few things. First, it demonstrates the need for a complete reference transaction. We must never oversimplify a childās request. Second, it demonstrates the pride inherent in a positive transaction. Clearly, this boy is proud of his ability to locate the information he needs without his fatherās help. He is also grateful to the librarian who helped him (making him more likely to ask again). Last, it demonstrates the affectĀ developmental stagesĀ have on a reference transaction. Horning surmised that the boy was trying to help her in his roundabout way. He was describing a type of book (geographic as non-fiction); a level (alphabet plus words as early reader); and a genre (Pluto as science) (59). Had she stopped at the initial question she would have come nowhere near his request.
Young Adults
The Importance of a Whole Library Approach to Public Library Young Adult Services: A YALSA Issue PaperĀ references recent research findings that the brain is only 80% developed by adolescence. This confirms the idea that young adults must have access to every part of the library; some may be in need of children's resources, while others may need adult materials. This "whole library approach" stresses collaboration across departments for collection development as well as information literacy support. YALSA recommends that young adult services be integrated into the library as a whole.
As Silverstein noted, young teens are just beginning to struggle with health and mortality issues. These issues may be so personal to them that they wish to conduct investigations on their own, without involving a parent or adult. Relevant, factual and current information is not only beneficial but expected (āTeen Services Evaluationā¦ā). Additionally, teen years are when questions of sexuality emerge. While many agree that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender teens (GLBTQ) are big library users, there is little research on the reference service they receive (Curry 66). Curryās unobtrusive investigation in British Colombia revealed that only 50% of librarians studied conveyed approachability and interest, while 30% were described as ācold,ā āreservedā or āneutralā (70). Additionally, only three of 20 librarians explained how to use the sources, and only six of the 20 accompanied the user to the shelves (71). This study is important because it addresses the need of reference librarians to be open and understanding to every kind of question they receive. The study revealed two instances in which librarians destroyed the confidentiality of the userās question by being loud. This studyās implications affect the type of reference service given to youth in general. The user in the study stated she would only return to 40% of the libraries visited, revealing how instrumental reference services are to return library use (72).
The Imposed Query
A central issue in reference services to youth is the nature of the imposed query. An imposed query is information sought on behalf of another (Gross). This is seen often in childrenās services, due to homework assignments. Not only do many youths not fully understand assignments, they may be uninterested in the project or arrive at the library at the last minute (Gross). There is also an instance of ādouble-imposed queryā when a parent asks a question on behalf of the child who has an assignment on behalf of a teacher. Obviously, this sort of reference interaction can be difficult. The best-case scenario is to be prepared for the question. Librarians can keep assignment sheets if they are available, or teacherās may send an Assignment Alert form pre-alerting librarians to projects (Gross). A standard difficulty of the imposed query is the inability to really conduct a follow up with the patron. In many cases, only the teacher knows if the question has been fully satisfied (Gross). Interaction with teachers in the community may alleviate some of this.
Information Seeking Behavior of Students
Libraries are excellent centers in which students can find help for research assignments and yet too many students are unaware of the research services libraries provide (Kuhlthau; Leckie 205).
Research papers are assigned to help students learn about subjects or issues they are often unfamiliar with, which is precisely why students āhave a hard time getting started on their research papersāāstudents, as inexperienced researchers, ādo not know how to narrow either their reading or the topicā (Leckie 203-204).
After the topic is chosen, students search for information only to discover inconsistent and incompatible information (e.g. opposing viewpoints). In addition to the confusion and frustration they feel (Kuhlthau), students have āno sense of who might be important in a particular field, and find it difficult to build and follow a citation trail... They do not think in terms of an information-seeking strategyā (Leckie 202). As a result, they have trouble differentiating between appropriate (scholarly) and inappropriate (mainstream/popular periodicals) sources. They may even reject the very sources best suited for their research because āthe words in the title did not match the words they were using to describe their topicā or search inappropriate databases (Leckie 204).
Librarians can help students navigate through these issuesāif the two connect. Students may view the library as intimidating and may never enter the building (Leckie 204). There are times when, conversely, librarians may feel overwhelmed by the number of students seeking help with the same assignment. Regardless, when students do approach the librarian, it is important to give them the same time, attention and in-depth reference interview that librarians would give adults. āThis is not to suggest that librarians be involved in every stage of the information search process of every studentā (Kuhlthau). The goal is to make students independent researchersānot dependent on librarians (Leckie 206).
Fortunately, librarians can prepare students for research before the process begins by collaborating with teachers (Kuhlthau; Leckie 201). Teachers themselves may not be aware of the research services libraries provide, and it is therefore up to the librarians to reach out to teachers (Leckie 206).
Homework Help
Recognizing the importance of aiding children in their schoolwork, many public libraries have developed dedicated homework help centers or programs, either in-person or online. Homework help takes many different forms, and can be integrated into the current reference services, or exist as an additional library service.
In-person homework centers offer one-on-one assistance for children with their homework. Often this takes the form of a standard reference interview with the goal of the librarian to aid the child in researching the assignment. At other libraries, homework help programs offer one-on-one tutoring and academic assistance in the form of an after-school program (Gish). Relying heavily on volunteers, homework programs fill many needs for students including offering a safe place to study, access to materials, and personal help in tackling difficult assignments. Homework help programs are especially valuable for students who are not native English-speakers and who may face additional challenges in their studies while having access to less support (Gish). Benefits of in-person homework help extend beyond academic support, and include increased self-confidence and a chance for students to develop social relationships in a supportive environment (Gish).
Online homework assistance also takes many forms, but always starts with the libraryās website. Libraries offering online homework help reach students wherever and whenever they access the Internet, and online homework help is a popular option with the 73% of students that use computers for homework (Michaelson). This online assistance can be provided by chat, by email, or by online forum, and may take place live or asynchronously. In order to offer live homework assistance outside of library hours, many libraries now subscribe to online tutoring services. Many factors need to be taken into account when selecting an online tutoring or homework assistance service including tutor quality, safety and the student experience, customer support, price and reporting (Michaelson). Trial periods can be negotiated with most vendors allowing an opportunity to evaluate the service and choose the correct product for your library.
Web 2.0 Reference Services
In our increasingly technological world, it's no surprise that children and teens are adept in digital skills. Considered digital natives, children and teens today have never lived in a world without computers, the internet, and increasingly, mobile technologies.

According to theĀ OCLC 2010 Perceptions Report, teens and young adults are continuing their online information habits--particularly seeing growth in use of ask-an-expert sites, social media and texting. As this infograf [right] from the 2010 report highlights, teens (ages 14-17) fairly frequently use library services, as well as heavily engage in social media sites (85%); social networking sites (72%) and ask-an-expert sites (62%). Harnessing teens' prowess for using online social media as well as their propensity for turning to online "experts" could hold the key for developing web 2.0 reference services, including chat reference, email reference, user-generated FAQs, and mobile applications geared toward reference services.
Teen Use of Chat Reference Services
So how are teens using chat reference services already? Based on an informal review of chat reference transcripts between librarians and patrons who indicated they were under the age of 18 in three states (New Jersey, Colorado and Maryland), Kortz, Morris and Greene (2006, 12-19) identified four key question categories:
Homework & Research
These queries make up the majority of questions received via chat from middle- and high-schoolers (about 75%-85%), and they can include anything from narrowing research topics, selecting sources, citation help, or ready reference.
Personal & Recreational
This type of question made up about 15%-20% of the overall transcripts, and touched on areas from finding part-time employment, skill building and information on hobbies to celebrity/pop culture information and specific website recommendations. While some of these types of questions may not seem important--especially to reference librarians who are used to working more with adults--it's still important to remain nonjudgmental, conduct a reference interview and get the patron to information (14-15).
Inappropriate & Prank
Fortunately, these types of chats do not occur very often (less that 2% in the chats that were analyzed), and seemed to fall into two categories: "goofing around" and "inappropriate language." It's important that some sort of reference interview still occur--even if the librarian expects it's a prank chat--to determine if it's a serious inquiry (for example: a 9th grader doing research for a sex ed class may initially appear to be asking a prank question, depending on how he/she approaches the query). Another tactic if the patron appears to be "bored" and simply looking to talk with someone is to send them a link to some online procrastination games or other educational games websites (many public libraries link to such resources--sometimes even in their online homework help sections). By not scolding the teens who may not be using the service appropriately but sending them an engaging link, the librarian is a) keeping the service open to patrons who have real inquiries, and b) encouraging future use of the initial patron, by showing them that there is a real person on the other end of the line who is willing to help them out (16-17).
It may also be handy to have scripted messages available to send if a patron persists with inappropriate behavior or language during a chat session (example: Your language is inappropriate for this service. Please change it, or you will be disconnected.) (18).
Crisis or "cry for help"
While the informal evaluation of chat transcripts found the "crisis" question to be the most rare, they are often the most memorable for online reference librarians. If teens ask about suicide, eating disorders, cutting, etc., it is important to refer them to the resources you would if they were physically present in the library (prevention hotlines, crisis counseling, etc.) Librarians are not responsible for counseling patrons in crisis; but Kortz, Morris and Greene say that acknowledging the emotions can go a long way in working toward a more productive session (i.e. the patron contacting one of the prevention services the librarian provides).
In a pilot focus group conducted by Greene and Thompson in 2004, teens revealed that when it comes to asking for help with information seeking, they prefer chat over e-mail; they place high value on anonymity; they appreciate high-speed options such as chat or text; the acknowledge a need and appreciation for services that help them save time doing their homework and/or research; and they also appreciated the ability to be able to develop virtual relationships with librarians they deemed helpful while avoiding ones they did not (10-11). By keeping teens' priorities in mind when addressing the various types of questions, librarians and patrons both will be more likely to have a positive experience with the chat transaction.
Common Web 2.0 Reference Tools
Chat Programs: More and more libraries are implementing their own chat reference services, which is staffed during some or all of the regular reference desk hours. This can differ from adult services and teen/young adult or children's services, or there may be one chat service for all patron age groups. If your library does not have its own chat widget set up on the website, linking in to state-wide or national services can also be an option. Common programs include: AIM, Meebo, Pidgin, LibraryH3lp, Trillian, etc.
Text/SMS Services: Based on the findings in the OCLC 2010 Perceptions Report, teens are addicted to texting. As more and more people access the internet and other data via mobile devices, texting is one way reference librarians may be able to reach and engage teen patrons. Aside from considerations such as cost of texting per phone plan and character-count limitations, there are other distinct characteristics about texting (or SMS) that suggest libraries should also develop a set of best practices for this mode of communication. According to Lili Luo (2012) in her article "Professional Preparation for 'Text a Librarian,'" "While texting is technically an asynchronous channel, it is often used synchronously, especially among teens, the largest demographic of texters. The different characteristics of service venues makes it necessary to develop venue-specific best practices.Reference librarians need to be aware of each service venueās impact on their behavioral performance, and be equipped with proper skills and knowledge in response to it." This awareness is especially important for reference librarians who regularly work with teenagers. Common programs include: Google SMS, AIM Hack, LibraryH3lp and Mosio.
Social Media: While conclusive studies on the effectiveness on social media as a reference tool--particularly with a youth services bent--still have room for development, libraries who are active on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook are able to field basic reference questions (mostly service related), and also embedding chat widgets and links to library reference resources on Facebook profile pages or Twitter posts can facilitate reference engagement.

Examples of Online Reference Resources
Beyond virtual chat reference, online reference sources continue to grow in popularity (even eclipsing print sources in many instances). There are a few significant benefits to online resources:
Many resources the library pays for may be accessed remotely with a password.
They are much more current than print resources.
There are many free resources youths may utilize in the library, at school, or at home.
This last benefit is significant because a child who has not received a library card, lives in a rural area where the library has little invested in databases or who is simply curious may access these resources without cost. The resources listed below are freely accessible.
Free Children's Resources
Internet Public Library For Kids
Internet Public Library (IPL) for Kids has a prominent search box, making it similar to Google, and thus familiar to many users. It also contains separate categories for common searching. It is colorful, not too busy and easy to navigate. The childrenās page contains a tab on the right with more common searches-likely for school, e.g. information on presidents, states and science. IPL also has the āAsk a Librarianā feature, which provides vetted answers from professionals or students in the field. One problem with IPL is that many links are frequently not updated and ending up with a bad link might stop the search then and there.
International Children's Digital Library
The ICDL is an excellent resource for readers advisory and book selection for children. The fanciful glittering book in the center of the homepage leads to a selection screen with the ability to search for a book by its color, its size (small, medium, large), or various other descriptors. Its simplicity relates to the way children ask and search for books that they may have read or are looking to read.
Kid's Catalog Web
The Los Angeles Public Library supports Kidās Catalog Web, another good source for childrenās reference. It is simple and has tabs for various kinds of searching: icon searching, type searches, alphabetical and readersā advisory. There is also a āhelpā tab to describe the different functions of the searches.
KidsHealth
This site is an excellent resource for children interested in the science of biology and how their body works. On a given weekday this site has more than 700,000 hits. It also has won four Webby awards: Best Family/Parenting Site and Best Health Site on the Web, Parent's Choice Gold Award, Teacher's Choice Award for Family, and the International Pirelli Award for best educational media for students (Izenberg).
Other sites of interest to children would be the sites for kids fromĀ National GeographicĀ andĀ Discovery. However, these sites are designed in the way that adults have come to accept as normal and may require some help navigating for children.
Free Teen Resources
Teens will be using a combination of childrenās and adult materials (Braun, Flowers and Hestler). Some of the following resources will be of interest to teens (particularly theĀ Internet Public Library) but many will be those adult databases subscribed to by the public library. Additionally, as indicated by research, brand recognition is huge and teens will be consistently turning to those search engines they are familiar with (Hargittai et al 488).
Internet Public Library for Teens
IPL for Teens also has a centralized search box and various frequently searched subject tabs. The āAsk a Librarianā feature may be even more useful to teens as they approach broad research projects.
Advocates for Youth
This site is an excellent resource for teens interested in information on reproductive and sexual health. It can also be a resource for their parents.
Teen Ink
This is a literary magazine written by teens and for teens. It includes creative writing as well as journalistic writing on current events.
Government Resources
In recent years more and more government resources have been made available online, thus making a multitude of quality sources easily accessible to librarians and their youth patrons. They give children the opportunity to learn more about their government and how it works, as well as exposure to such unique and cool things like historical diaries, letters and songs. The following is a list of websites that provide quality government resources, and most of them are geared to children and youth (Harper 2011).
Benās Guide to U.S. Government for Kids
This site is provided by the U.S. Government Printing Office, and is designed for grade school students through high school. It offers educational information on how the government works, accessing primary source materials, and citizenship.

On this page, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers a list of educational websites for children and teens on a variety of topics including environmental health and making healthy lifestyle choices.

An excellent ready reference site, this website is designed to simplify the search process for government information online and includes links to such things as government websites, publications, and political information. A drop-down menu of U.S. states gives quick links to that stateās government websites and information.
Kids.gov
This website is the U.S. governmentās official website for kids. It is designed for students between kindergarten and 8th grade, as well as parents and educators. Visitors to the site can do three main things: ālearn stuffā, āplay gamesā, and āwatch videosā on a wide variety of topics including art, exercise and eating, and math.
Kids and Families Section of the Library of Congress
The Library of Congress has created a fabulous collection of resources geared for grade and middle school students. Visitors to the site can explore American history through such things as audio files and games in āAmericaās Library.ā The section āEveryday Mysteriesā provides information about fun science facts. There is much, much to explore on this site.
National Gallery of Art Kids
A fun and creative site, the National Gallery of Art offers this as an interactive site where children can learn about the National Galleryās collections and exhibitions as well as participate in a variety of activities such as manipulating art objects.

Reference Services in the School Library
Reference services are one of the most important aspects of the school library; the reference desk is often the place where students and faculty alike seek help from information specialist. School librarians must fill many roles when working in the reference section of the library; they help students and faculty find the appropriate resources, they provide instruction to users to ensure the proper use of library resources, specifically technological resources, and they aid teachers in the development and facilitation of lessons. In addition to fulfilling all of these demands, reference librarians are also tasked with supervision of the library space and its materials.
Provision of Access to information and Appropriate Resources
Librarians have a responsibility to guide users to selecting resources that are appropriate to their purpose. To fulfill this responsibility, library media specialists must have knowledge of the resources and materials available to users. Additionally, they must have knowledge of the user and the users' information needs. Information power: Guidelines for school library media programs suggest that for librarians to be proficient in providing users with the guidance necessary to find the appropriate resources they must be adept in the following areas:
"the complete range of educational materials, their potential uses, and their relationships to each other"
"the psychological, social, and intellectual development of children and adolescents"
"techniques for determining individual needs and interests and for matching them with appropriate materials"
"approaches for presenting materials that make reading, listening, and viewing meaningful and attractive" (American Association of School Librarians & Association for Educational Communications and Technology 30)
Elementary and secondary students have a tendency to shut down if they have difficulty locating resources, so often librarians working in schools have to be diligent in understanding the students' needs and aiding the student in finding the best information and resources.
Provision of instruction to Users
Library Media Specialist are often charged with the duty of helping students use technology to find the appropriate resources. This responsibility ranges from helping students use the OPAC to locate books and media resources, to helping them use better search terms to locate information on the internet. These tasks also require the librarian to be skilled in the art searching; however, it also requires the librarian to be skilled in the art of teaching. Inevitably, it is the librarian's job to teach students to become autonomous information seekers, and it is through providing instruction that librarians achieve this task. Information power: Guidelines for school library media programs asserts that "Library media specialist are responsible for ensuring that skills, knowledge, and attitudes concerning information access, use, and communication are an integral part of the school curriculum" (American Association of School Librarians & Association for Educational Communications and Technology, 31-32). To achieve this goal library media specialist often conduct orientation for students, these orientations teach students the basics of searching for information in the library. However, beyond the initial orientation, librarians provide students with one-on-one direct instruction guiding students through the information process. Some school libraries even hold technology seminars in which they teach students how to use different technologies in a small group format.
Provision of Instructional Support to Faculty
Effective librarians collaborate with colleagues and faculty members to ensure that library's resources are being utilized to enrich curriculum. This collaboration is important because librarians often have a specialized knowledge and resource base from which classroom teachers can benefit. Specifically, librarians may have access to special collections that can enrich a specific unit or may have access to equipment or resources that can help a teacher better facilitate a lesson or unit. Additionally, library media specialist are trained information specialist and they can aid teachers in the facilitation information seeking procedures.
Public and School Library Collaboration
Collaboration between public libraries and school libraries is imperative to academic achievement of youth (de Groot and Branch 51). While public libraries provide free services and materials to children and their families, school centers focus on literacy and the use of these materials. However, due to budget cuts, many times one organization must rely on the other. According to a study by Hart in Cape Town, South Africa, students relied primarily on public library support for homework and research projects (qtd. in de Groot and Branch 56). As detailed in the discussion of the imposed query, many times librarians in a public library setting do not have all the necessary information to answer a homework question. A suggestion made by some is the use of an Assignment Alert form to inform public librarians of likely questions to come (Gross, Jacobson and Sutton 291). Another suggestion is the use of a āCanāt Fill Request Noticeā to inform teachers of the students attempt at the research. Public librarians are also encouraged to reach out to schools by integrating themselves with book-talks and story-telling visits (Gross).
Modeling good reference skills is important. Also important is focused teaching of information literacy. In a report of Internet use in Rhode Island, it was noted that where the median internet connections in childrenās or youth areaās was one, the median in schools was six (Eaton et al. 52). While students were more likely to use the computers for entertainment in the public library, they did school work in both (54). One school librarian noted that tech classes taught evaluating sources, as though it was not their concern (54). Both public and school library specialists noted a worry that youth are not aware of the dangers related to privacy concerns on the Internet, and yet none of their responses indicated addressing this skill (58).
In all instances, time and budget constraints were targeted for blame at the missing components of information literacy instruction. While this is understandable, it is clear that collaboration between public and school librarians might attempt to bridge this gap. In an increasingly technological society, skills for accessing sources as well as being aware of privacy concerns are necessary. Information literate children become information literate adults. A good indication of the success of reference interactionsāalbeit impossible to measureāwould be the ability to carry skills from childhood into adulthood. Collaboration is a step in the right direction.

Overview
What Is a Makerspace?
Have you ever envisioned a library where, āKids gather to make Lego robots; teens create digital music, movies, and gamesāØwith computers and mixers; and students engineer new projects while adults create prototypes for small business products with laser cutters and 3D printersā (American Libraries, 2013, pg. 44)?
Well, many libraries are offering places called āmakerspaces,ā which are āpart of a growing movement of hands-on, mentor-led learning environments to make and remake the physical and digital worlds. They foster experimentation, invention, creation, exploration, and STEM learningā (Institute of Museum and Library Services, 2012, para.1).
Makerspaces are also known as, Fab Labs, Hackerspaces, Makelabs, Digital Media Labs, DIY Spaces, Creative Spaces, or Tech Shops. Makerspaces are comprised of or include "a continuum of activity that includes āco-working,ā āhackerspace,ā and āfab labā; the common thread running through each is a focus on making rather than merely consuming" (Colegrove, 2013, pg. 3). They can,ābe embedded inside an existing organization or standalone on its own. It could be a simple room in a building or an outbuilding thatās closer to a shed. The key is that it can adapt to a wide variety of uses and can be shaped by educational purposes as well as the studentsā creative goalsā (Behen, 2013, pg. 72).

Makerspaces can include but are not characterized by:

3D printers -- printers which produce 3D models from a digital file, generally out of plastics (Abram, 2013).
3D scanners -- scanners which create digital models of physical objects that can in turn be "printed" using 3D printers ("Makerspace," n.d.).
Laser cutters -- machines which have the ability to accurately cut or etch materials from a digital file ("Makerspace," n.d.).
Arduino -- microcontroller boards that have the ability to read input from sensors, control outputs like lights or motors, and connect to computer software (āWhat is Arduino?,ā n.d.).
Raspberry Pi -- affordable computers no bigger than a credit card that plug into monitors and keyboards (āFAQs,ā n.d.).
The Educate to Innovate Initiative and Maker Corps
In 2009, President Obama launched the initiative, āEducate to Innovateā (Schulman, 2013). The President said, "I want us all to think about new and creative ways to engage young people in science and engineering, whether it's science festivals, robotics competitions, fairs that encourage young people to create and build and inventāto be makers of things, not just consumers of things" (Obama 2009).
From the āEducate to Innovateā initiative came, āThe Maker Education Initiativeāsā Maker Corps. Maker Corps was created to āempower young adults, makers themselves, to become role models and to help them inspire others in their communities to involve more children in makingā (Thomas, 2012b, para.3). In the summer of 2013, The Maker Education Initiative introduced a Maker Corps pilot program. The Mission of this program is that, āMaker Corps will create teams of young makers who can share their enthusiasm for making and their love of learning with younger children and teens, offering support and encouragement that helps introduce them to science and technology in a personal way" (Thomas, 2012a, para.1).

The goals of the Maker Corps program are to:
āProvide opportunities for makers to gain leadership skills, increase confidence and build career readiness skillsā (Maker Corps, 2013, pg. 1).
āExpand the network of maker mentors and community leadersā (Maker Corps, 2013, pg. 1).
āExpose more youth and families to creative problem-solving through makingā (Maker Corps 2013, pg. 1).
āExpand the capacity of youth-serving organizations to serve their communities in maker-oriented projectsā (Maker Corps, 2013, pg. 1).
Why Libraries and Makerspaces?
Many public, school, and academic libraries have decided to join the āMaker Movement.ā By joining the movement, libraries are providing their patrons with opportunities to experience by building, constructing, developing, and working on projects with others in their community and with those who share similar or mutual interests. Makerspaces in libraries can:
āFoster play and explorationā (Britton, 2012, para. 3).
āWork with community members as true partners, not as users or patronsā (Britton, 2012).
āDevelop a culture of creating as opposed to consumingā (Britton, 2012, para. 3).
āReorient the library towards greater user engagement, collaborative creative activity, and participatory learningā (Bailey, 2012, para. 4).
āPosition the library as a place of building, inventing, and doing instead of a static location of consumption and acquisitionā (Bailey, 2012, para. 4).
āCater to a particular type of library patron: inventors, artists, entrepreneurs, crafters and youth groups. The technology used in these workshops can revolutionize the manufacturing process, allowing designs and creations that can be modified to suit individuals in ways not possible with mass productionā (Newcombe & Belbin, 2012, para.5)
āHelp cultivate creative interests, imagination, and passion by allowing students to draw upon multiple intelligencesā (Wong, 2013, pg. 35).
āEmbrace tinkering, or playing, in various forms of exploration, experimentation and engagement, and foster peer interactions as well as the interests of a collective teamā (Wong, 2013, pg. 35).

Some makerspaces simply provide a space for people to come and tinker. Others provide digital media equipment for people to utilize in the creation of a variety of projects. One example of this is the YOUmedia network (www.youmedia.org). āYOUmedia are spaces where kids explore, express, and create using digital media. YOUmediaās core philosophy is that youth are best engaged when theyāre following their passions, collaborating with others, and being makers and doers, not passive consumersā¦YOUmedia are transformative spacesāand catalystsāfor new kinds of thinking about libraries, museums, and community centers. The sites are open, flexible, and highly creative, with inspiration zones, production zones, and exhibition labs where youth āhang out, mess around, and geek out.ā YOUmedia connects three realms of learningāpeer groups, interests, and academicsāin deliberate ways. One of the most important aspects is that they connect learning directly back to school, careers, and other realmsā (āAboutā).
YOUmedia started in Chicago, and is expanding in different ways across the country. One branch of YOUmedia is the Learning Labs Project, which began in September 2010. It is āan initiative of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation...in answer to President Obamaās āEducate to Innovateā campaign, which called on public and private sector partners to work together to improve Americaās student participation and performance in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)ā (āLocationsā). With a series of grants, the IMLS and the Foundation are working to set up 30 Learning Labs in libraries and museums across the country.
The Studio at Anythink Wright Farms (www.anythinklibraries.org/thestudio), a branch with the Rangeview Library District in Thornton, CO, is a recent addition to the Learning Lab initiative. In 2012, Anythink was awarded a $100,000 grant from IMLS and the MacArthur Foundation to build a digital lab. Built in the spring of 2013, The Studio has three sound-proof rooms (one of which is a recording studio), a green screen, video equipment, and the full Adobe Creative Suite. The idea behind The Studio is to fill teenās technological needs and help them become contact creators. āAt The Studio, itās not just about what you do, but who you will become. We partner creative community members with teens to help push their creativity to new bounds. These creation labs are places where teens are connected with tools to express their creativity ā whether they want to be performers, designers, filmmakers or sportscastersā (āThe Studioā). With help from the Tween/Teen Guides (librarians), and the Artists in Residence, teens can learn 21st century technology skills, experiment with a variety of equipment, and fuel their interests.
In the recording studio, which can be used for two hours at a time, teens can record their voices and/or music, make podcasts, sports casts, voiceovers, and create their own beats. This room comes equipped with a computer with Garage Band editing software, a MIDI keyboard, microphones, and a guitar.

Next to the recording studio is a green screen, where teens can experiment with lighting techniques, and take pictures or record images with digital cameras available for check out. There is a nearby editing station where they can upload their videos or images, and substitute the green screen with whatever background they want ā stationary or animated. Editing software available to them includes the Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, and the iLife Suite. They can also incorporate their creations from the recording studio into their final product.

The Studio also includes graphic design and photo editing software, and two other sound-proof rooms, which can be spaces for video gaming, karaoke, and quiet places for studying. There is also an extra large Windows Surface that teens can use for web browsing, music, news feeds, and apps.

Anythink, along with libraries and museums across the country, applied for this grant in a nationwide competition, and was one of the first 12 recipients of the grant. The other 11 locations (four museums and seven libraries) for learning labs included:

The Maker Movement
Even if a library canāt afford or doesn't have room to have a designated āmakerspace,ā there are other ways to get involved in the Maker movement. The Maker movement doesn't just include makerspaces, but all kinds of maker opportunities.
When looking into the Maker movement, Maker Media is a good name to know.Ā Maker MediaĀ has been the driving force behind the Maker movement, beginning with the first publication ofĀ MAKE MagazineĀ in 2005 (āMaker Media,ā 2013). Maker Media produces theĀ Maker FaireĀ andĀ Makezine, an online zine that offers makers project ideas, as well asĀ Maker Shed, an online store that sells kits and other supplies for makerspaces.
Not having a āspaceā for your āMakerspaceā doesnāt mean you canāt contribute to the Maker movement. For instance, a āPop up Makerspaceā is a temporary makerspace set up in an alternative location, like a classroom (Houston, 2013). Mobile makerspaces, which are able to be moved easily to and from a space and probably lower tech, are always an option (āTeen Makerspaces,ā 2013). Makerspaces donāt have to have high tech tools like 3D printers. They can get started with as little as a few craft supplies and a rolling cart.
Another alternative is for a library to get involved in a Maker Faire. Touted as the āGreatest Show (and Tell) on Earth,ā theĀ Maker FaireĀ is an annual celebration of the Maker movement (āMaker Faire,ā 2013, para. 1). Maker Faires allow makers to share their creations and let others know about the Maker movement. Traditionally, the main Maker Faire is located in the Bay Area, as that is where the Faire started in 2006 (āMaker Faire,ā 2013). But since the Maker movement has spread, so have Maker Faires, with a āWorld Maker Faireā taking place in New York City and āMini Maker Fairesā popping upĀ around the worldĀ (āMaker Faire,ā 2013). Mini Maker Faires are getting more popular as the Maker movement spreads. Even Urbana-Champaign, IL holds its ownĀ Mini Maker FaireĀ to showcase makers in the community.
It is also possible to involve a local maker group, many of which have popped up around the country (i.e.,Ā Makerspace UrbanaĀ in Urbana, IL). Getting a community group involved in the libraryās efforts may draw in extra interest, especially if they are well known.

What Is Readers' Advisory?

Readers' advisory involves matching readers with books. The onus, however, is not on providing just age-appropriate books, or the right reference sources, or only the highest quality literature.What separates readers' advisory from much of the work youth services librarians do is that they are providing materials for reading that is fun and voluntary. Readers' advisors are concerned with three things: discovering readers' interests, finding books to match those interests, and relating books' appeals to patrons.Ā [1]
A book's appeal goes beyond what the book is about (its subject) to encompass the experience the book offersĀ [2].Ā Joyce Sarick defines the four most common appeals that lend to a book's experience as pacing, characterization, story line, and frameĀ [3].Ā To learn more about how to detect and articulate a book's appeals, librarians can consult The Readers' Advisory Guide to Genre Fiction or The RA Toolbox in NoveList.
Readers' advisory isn't limited to just books. Any reading materials that youth enjoy should be included when making suggestions to readers. Librarians should keep in mind that formats like graphic novels, comic books, e-books, and magazines can be just as appealing to youth as traditional books. As such, they should be considered when performing readers' advisory services. Some libraries are also beginning to look at other types of media such as videos, games, and music to connect youth with materials they will enjoy.
Why Practice RA for Youth?
Readers' advisory connects youth with materials primarily for pleasure. So why is pleasure reading important?
Development of positive assets: The Search Institute identifies pleasure reading as an important internal asset needed for youth to succeed. Public and school librarians can help develop this asset through their services including readers' advisoryĀ [4].
Risk-taking: Kids and teens who choose what they read can explore social and moral limits and encounter new ideas, without simultaneously engaging in risky behaviorsĀ [5].
Improving reading skills: Stephen Krashen, a well-known reading researcher, contends that the easiest and most effective method of improving reading skills is often the most ignored. What is that method? Enabling kids to have access to their choice of interesting texts to read.[6]
The Challenges of Youth Readers' Advisory
Matching readers with books they'll enjoy is no easy task in any setting, but RA for youth presents some unique challenges. These challenges including dealing with:
Sensitive materials: It may be difficult for some librarians to fight the urge to protect young people from sex, drugs, or offensive language found in some books. This can be a particularly tough issue for school librarians, who may face pressure from parents, administrators, and even other teachers to only provide wholesome literature. In addition, what's offensive or off-limits to one reader might be perfectly acceptable to another.
Proxy requests: Parents, relatives, or family friends may come to the reference desk looking for a book for the young person in their lives. This presents the problem of serving the needs of the adult making the request while at the same time finding interesting materials for the youthĀ [7].Ā Adults may not know or may not like what these youths are reading, so assessing interests can be extremely difficult.
Difficulty articulating interests: Young people, particularly very young children, may know what they like to read but may not be able to express it to a librarian. Many young people also have no familiarity with appeal terms. Librarians that use appeal jargon during RA interviews with youths may seem like they're speaking another language.
How It's Done
The Readers' Advisory Interview
The readers' advisory interview most commonly follows from either a direct reader request or a librarian recognizing that a young person is looking for a book without success. This is the RA technique that involves the most librarian and reader interaction. As such it can be either the most satisfying or frustrating RA technique to practice. Some suggestions for conducting a successful RA interview for young readers:
Hand it over: Let the reader handle the books you are suggesting. If at all possible, let the reader look at the books by themself for a few moments. This allows the reader to decide if the books look appealing as well as to consider any sensitive material away from prying librarian eyesĀ [8].
Avoid jargon: Young people may not know what appeal terms mean. Instead of using appeal terms, try using descriptive phrases to communicate. For instance, instead of asking what kind of frame they are looking for in a book, you might ask if they like books set in a specific time or place.
Allow time to answer: Kids and teens likely need more time to process information and form a response than adults do. Pause for a few seconds after asking a question before firing any clarifying questions at your interviewee.
Ask why: Asking young people for the names of books they've enjoyed in the past is a good RA question. But knowing a title is not enough--you need to find out why they liked the book. A book may be well-known for one appeal characteristic but your reader may like it based on an entirely different characteristic. Know what appeals to the reader standing in front of you before making any suggestionsĀ [9].
Other Readers' Advisory Techniques
Other readers' advisory techniques may involve less interaction than the RA interview or no interaction at all. Readers' advisory takes many different forms, both in the physical and online environments of the library. Below is just a small sample of the many techniques besides the RA interview that librarians can use to provide readers' advisory for youth:
Displays: Displays of books can be made very simple or very elaborate, depending on available space and librarian time. No matter how much time or space is available, the keys to creating a good display are ensuring that the books are in good condition and that the display itself is visibleĀ [10].Ā Making the display visible requires that it be placed in the areas where kids and teens frequent in the school or public library.
Themed Book Lists: Materials on a themed book list may share a similar subject (ex. books about poodles) or may be linked by genre and similar appeals (ex. mystery books that share a dark tone and fast-paced action). Book lists may also bring together books that appeal to certain age groups or that feature particular cultural groups. Patrons can find these lists at the circulation, reference, or youth service areas throughout the library. Most public libraries also share themed book lists through their websites or social networking presence. Lists may contain just the basic information about a title (ex. name, author, call number), but many also provide brief descriptions of each book's plot and appeals.
Readers' Advisory Forms: Readers' advisory forms [dead link removed]Ā allow youth or their parents to fill in their reading interests and receive suggestions back from a librarian. The forms may be sent via email, regular mail, or may be delivered in person to librarians. Suggestions based on the forms may take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks to generate. These forms represent a compromise between passive and active advisory. They resemble passive advisory in the sense that readers do not need to interact with a librarian or even come to the library to receive reading suggestions. Yet these forms resemble active advisory because they allow readers to give their own input before the librarian generates a list of suggestions.
Book Talks: Book talks are like teaser trailers. They let the listeners know a bit about the book's plot without revealing the ending. The best book talks are not reviews; instead, they let the listeners know about a book's appeals so they can decide whether or not they'd like to give the book a chance. The best book talks also feature a "hook" at the beginning to capture the audience's attention. Book talks may be delivered in person at a school or public library, or librarians can record them as audio and video files and put them online.
Techniques for Staying Current
As much as youth services librarians would like to read everything they recommend to patrons, that just isn't possible. So how can librarians stay on top of what's new and what's interesting to patrons?
Reviews: School Library Journal, Kirkus, Horn Book, Booklist, and Publishers Weekly are some of the major review sources that can keep librarians aware of trends in youth literatureĀ [11].Ā Blogs authored by youth services librarians may also be a good resource for book reviews.
Readers' advisory reference sources: Many resources in the library's collection have ready-made lists of books linked by specific appeals. These are great to consult when a reader is looking for a read-alike for an unfamiliar (to you) book. In print, try consulting Penny Peck's Readers' Advisory for Children and 'Tweens or any of the youth titles in the Genreflecting series; online, try subscription sources like NoveList or the Children's Literature Comprehensive Database.
Speed reading: Speed reading allows librarians to get a feel for a book's appeals without making the time investment necessary to read the entire title. There are several different techniques for speed reading books, but most of them require the librarian to sample pages from the beginning, middle, and end of the book. Information about a book can also be gleaned by consulting the cover, the front and back jackets, and any pictures, photos, or illustrations.
Observation: For books that you will make time to read or speed read, Booth recommends thinking local. You can find out what's popular among your readers by checking return carts and shelf reading in the youth services area; titles that your young patrons enjoy will consistently show up on return carts and show signs of useĀ [12].Ā These are also the books to consider making read-alike lists for or including in a display with similar but less popular titles.
RA in Action: What Public and School Libraries are Doing
There are many different ways to provide readers' advisory, but here are some new twists on more traditional methods:
Book Bundles: The Mamie Ootid Eisenhower Public Library has taken read-alikes to another level. Instead of creating lists of read-alikes, youth librarians Gigi Yang and Erica Seagraves have actually bundled together books (with rubber bands and tags) that share common themes. Patrons can check out an entire bundle or just the books that they choose. The bundles allow teens to browse and literally get their hands on read-alikes in a way that traditional shelving just doesn't allowĀ [13].
Book Hooks: Olga Nesi, a librarian at Joseph B. Cavallero Intermediate School, created "Book Hook" forms to assist her with matching her students with books they'll enjoy. Nesi and another teacher at the school partnered to teach their students what appeal terms mean and how to write and talk about appeals. They then created the Book Hook form, which asks students to first provide a brief description of a book they've read, and then to list three terms they believe apply to the book's characterization, tone, pacing, and storylineĀ [14].Ā Nesi keeps the Book Hooks in a binder near the circulation desk, both for students to browse and for her to consult during RA interviews.
LibGuides: LibGuides, from the Springshare Company, have been widely used as instructional tools for subject disciplines in academic libraries. But some public libraries are now using the LibGuide templates to create readers' advisory guides for tech-savvy youth. These guides function as a sort of comprehensive online advisory, providing readers with suggestions for read-alikes, other media like video, fan sites, and more. The Vernon Area Public Library District's Diana Presta, for example, has created a visually appealing guide for the Twilight Saga [dead link removed]Ā that teens can view in the comfort of their own homes.

This is an excellent resource for understanding the unique aspects of providing readers' advisory to youth. Among other topics, Booth discusses how to modify the RA interview, move beyond award-winners, and take RA online to have the best chance of connecting teens with books they'll love.

Though not specifically designed for youth librarians, this handbook is a terrific resource. Two chapters, Suggesting Adult Books to Teen Readers and Readersā Advisory by Proxy for Teens, discuss challenges and opportunities specific to youth readersā advisory. Other chapters of interest discuss techniques that would be useful to any readersā advisor, including how to make your own book lists, how to identify read-alikes, and how to read a book in ten minutes.

This resource offers some great suggestions for talking about books with age groups who may not be very experienced at articulating what interests them. Subscription Sources
NoveList Plus/NoveList K-8 Plus
These subscription resources, available to public and school libraries, are extremely useful for finding read-alikes. Entries for most books also include appeal factors such as pacing and tone. Readers' advisors may also want to check out NoveList's RA toolbox to brush up on their skills.
Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD)
This resource contains records as well as reviews for children's and young adults' books. The database offers multiple ways to search for books, including by reading levels, awards received, language, and genre.
Blogs
BookendsĀ - Two middle school librarians, Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan, provide reviews for children's and teen's books. Past reviews are archived and can be accessed by category limiters such as grade level or theme. This resource is updated at least twice a week.
Reader GirlzĀ - Three young adult authors provide the latest news and reviews in young adult literature.
Reading Rants!Ā - Middle school librarian, Jennifer Hubert Swan, provides numerous reviews on a variety of teen books. Additionally, she provides an extensive collection of unique book lists and her favorite top ten book for each year.
Youth Services CornerĀ - Whitney Winn, an MLIS-degree holder with an interest in youth librarianship, hosts this blog. She periodically posts reviews of YA books she is reading. In addition, she maintains a list of books that have received multiple starred reviews from the major youth literature review sources. The blog is typically updated on a weekly basis.
