“What?” The sentiment was unexpected, came from nowhere, and for a minute Killian was at a loss for words, mouth gaping open like a fish caught on a hook. His older brother coming back into his life had been a miracle that the younger boy hadn’t thought possible - a chance for the two most important people to meet .... he had been all but bursting with the excitement of it as he and Guy had made their way to Liam’s flat.
Now, Killian was crestfallen; face turning redder by the minute as he fought the anger that threatened to burn him up every time he looked at the door that his brother had slammed in his boyfriend’s face. “What the fuck is wrong with you, huh? Did you not hear what I said? Jesus, Liam ... you’re just like dad, yeah?! Jumping on people before you even fuckin’ hear them out! You can’t protect me. You’ve never been able to protect me!” The accusation hung there for a moment, frozen between them as for the barest second Killian regretted what he said - but only for a second. Shoulders straightened, muscles along his neck and jaw tensing as he stepped forward, palms pressing against his brother’s chest with a shove. Had it been any other time the younger boy might have reacted with a punch but, as it was, Liam was still his brother... currently an asshole or not.
Teeth bit at his lip as he rocked on the balls of his feet, torn on whether to stay and try and make the older boy see or to chase down the one person he knew he could count on. The one person who’d never left him in the dust. Shoulders sagged in defeat as he bent down, picking up his bag and slinging it over one shoulder; mumbling words under his breath before straightening his shoulders and fixing his older brother with a glare “ You should’ve just stayed out of me fuckin’ life. I was stupid for thinking for one second that you’d be any different from anyone else in our family. We Joneses always let each other down.”

Yes, I did try to keep him safe while I was alive, but death, strangely enough, prevented me from helping him. You see, that’s what happens when you die.

Considering that our father abandoned us as children and sold us into slavery, I’m not exactly surprised that he believes I’m “extremely replaceable”. In fact, I would be rather shocked if he ever cared for me or Killian.

And it does hurt to know that I didn’t set a good enough example, and this all could have been prevented if I were a better brother.
But now, Killian has found his happy ending with Emma, and his future with her is what matters now. He has been redeemed.

Our father clearly didn’t care enough for either of his children to stay and raise us rather than to abandon us. Killian and I thought that was unforgivable. While murder probably wasn’t the best decision on Killian’s part, I really can’t say I blame him for being angry.
