Happy #femalefilmmakerfriday! This week’s featured female filmmaker is Oscar nominated Cinematographer, Rachel Morrison. Morrison attended NYU for her bachelor’s degree and the AFI conservatory cinematography program for her MFA. She has a diverse resume and kicked off her career working on shows like The Hills and Rykers High and festival films like The Sound of My Voice, Cake, and Dope. Morrison worked as Cinematographer with Ryan Coogler on two of his three films, Fruitvale Station and Black Panther. Last year, Morrison was the Cinematographer for previous female filmmaker Friday feature, Dee Rees’ film Mudbound. For Mudbound, Morrison earned several firsts: the first woman to win the New York Film Critics Award for Best Cinematographer, the first woman nominated for the American Society of Cinematographers Outstanding Achievement Award on the feature category, and the first ever woman (and first lgbt woman 🏳️‍🌈) nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography in the ceremony’s 91 year history. We can’t wait to see Rachel Morrison’s future projects (hopefully Black Panther 2 among many things) and many, many future awards! There's Joy in Truth: Walking in my truth has been the most fulfilling gift. A gift that has allowed me to choose myself because I was able to remove the mask of trying to please others and let go of the notion to "be liked." My joy comes from being filled with gratitude and transforming daily into a powerful, authentic, and responsible leader. My joy comes from knowing that as a women of trans experience I get to cherish each day; the good and the bad, As it may be my last. Uplifting that today Nov. 20th is Trans Day of Remembrance and is a day of mourning the lost of Trans* folks. Transgender and gender nonconforming the people; especially Trans women of color are disproportionately impacted by homicide. Together we must come together to bridge the gaps of communities and have dialogue to create safety for trans community Thank you Marcus @thelexvision for creating the opportunity to partake in @feminini_t.
