Wandering around the hospital had its perks, but so did being short. Staying small and out of the way was one of the few skills she’d cultivated at home, and it served her well enough. Particularly when it seemed like half the town was in the halls. That made sense, though. After the meeting, surely everyone who wasn’t hurt would want to follow up with the friends and family who had been. It felt so strange to be there, in the middle of everything and yet...still feel so disconnected from everything around her. The guilt from leaving and the guilt from returning burned a hole in her chest, one that was entirely deserved. And yet..it brought more questions than answers. Did she have any right to worry over the people she grew up with? Or grieve over what they’d lost (even if their families were still whole, there was no denying that something was lost at the meeting)?
After her time away, it was almost jarring to recognize nearly every face and figure in such close proximity. One particular figure was painfully familiar. Automatically, her feet took her to him. For once, the usual nervousness of being face to face with someone she’d left behind was nowhere to be found, instead being replaced with concern. If not Lev, then someone close to him was in the hospital. Her own bruises and pain were easily forgotten when the possibility of him being hurt presented itself. As she drew close, her gaze sought his face without the hesitation that was there the first time she’d seen him since coming back. Up, up, up she looked, craning her neck while she drew near. “Lev..were you hurt?” Angie asked quietly once she was near enough. Already, her fingers were itching to find a first aid kit. She didn’t even know if he was hurt, but the instinct to bandage him up was still as strong as it was before she left.

Angie beamed at her daughter, and reached out to brush the hair away from Lily’s face. “Baby,” she murmured softly as she leaned to press a kiss to the child’s head. Affection wasn’t something she’d had much of as a child, so Angie had made it her mission early on to give Lily more than she knew what to do with. “Have you decided on what you want?” At her daughters distracted mm-hmm, Angie couldn’t help but shake her head as a soft smile tugged at her lips. Watching Lily be so focused tugged at her heart a little. She looked so much like Charlie when she was like that.
Lily looked up from her drawing, looking around the table and on the floor for a colored pencil she couldn’t find. Her mother looked over the table, trying to see which color was missing. A frown tugged at Lily’s lips as she glanced up for a moment, only to be replaced with a beaming smile. “Uncle Lev! Uncle Lev, over here!” The eight-year old waved desperately to get the man’s attention. Thankfully, she didn’t leave her chair to throw herself at the man. Angie could only look over her daughter’s head, seeking out who had once been a dear friend with pleading eyes. Please..ignore me but don’t say anything that might make her feel bad..was it a prayer? Maybe. Angie leaned in and whispered a soft, “Go easy, baby,” earning her a bright grin before the girl bounced out of her chair, arms outstretched for a hug.
