Kandaâs predecessor died thirty years before the canon events. Around that time, Leverrier would have been around twenty years old, so they might have known each other. And I find thereâs a special brew of tragic in the idea that oneâs childhood friend and comrade eventually became the one responsible for much of the Orderâs unforgivable dark history.
In another post, I went into the mentality of the leaders of the Black Order and how years and decades of being hopelessly outnumbered in a war they donât expect to see the ending of may have warped their personalities and perspectives. Because, yeah, if you were born into a war and all you can do is send the chosen few off to fight and die, thatâs eventually going to take a mental and emotional toll. How many loved ones can you lose before you have to shut your eyes and force yourself to stop caring?
In regards to Leverrierâs character, I have a theory/headcanon that he is the end result of that, âI grew up in a war and most of my friends now dead,â mentality and heâs reached a mindset of, âJust win the war no matter the cost, otherwise everyone we loved died for nothing.â Itâs an expectation and pressure the younger generation of the Order does not deserve, and Iâll admit, I do love to see a terrible person finally turn around and be horrified by the miles of irreparably scorched earth they left behind them.
Hi guys, my finals have started, itâs been ages since Iâve last drawn for myself or been here, but I couldnât miss that One Day. Happy Birthday Anime Hitler

Triggers: Mentions of abuse, mentions of torture
Summary: Despite what they told her, Taryn knew her place wasnât here, serving alongside other victims of this forgotten war--serving an organization that had barely treated her as human, had torn her name and her humanity away from her, had tortured her. She had nowhere else to go, though. She was a caged animal.
Characters: Taryn Foley, Pax (c) me, Malcolm C. Leverrier, Lavi Bookman Jr. (c) Katsura Hoshino
Tagging: @tezariah because :3

âHow are you adjusting?â
Taryn tipped her head slightly, focusing blankly on the man sitting across from her before she glanced at the surrounding CROW. Then she returned her attention to Leverrier, gesturing with one hand to the team as if to say, Is this necessary?
He simply smiled. âProtocol,â he told her. âRecords show that your bird has been known to attack when he doesnât like individuals. Supervisor Wilmot Heilig, for example.â
Taryn sat back, raising a single eyebrow and giving the inspector an incredulous look.
âA simple routine check-up,â Leverrier spoke. âNo reason for you to unleash your weapon on your superior.â
She looked away.
A routine check-up.
That was a lie.
Sheâd been tortured at the hands of the Black Order--of Heilig--only moments before the attack had occurred. Sheâd had no control of Paxâs actions, too consumed by the agony that had still been searing her body to even realize what the gyrfalcon had done until she heard the loud clatter and saw Heilig slumping against the railing.
âYou havenât answered my question, Miss Foley.â
She snorted.
âHow are you adjusting?â
Her fingers twitched, longing for the familiar feeling of the wooden handle of her hunting knife beneath the pads of her fingertips.
What would Charlotte say?
Taryn laughed dryly, except she was mute at the moment, her vocal cords torn to shreds by overuse. So her laughter was hollow and noiseless, a simple, emotionless huff that spoke volumes regardless.
She turned her gaze sideways, spying the form of the eyepatched redhead dwelling in the shadowed corner of the room.
A single green eye caught in the dim light, moving quickly to take in the subtle motions of everyone in the room before settling on her once more, anticipating her next action--beyond the four walls of this room, the Bookman in training was an ally, but here, he was little more than a ghost.
Should she even be acknowledging a spectre?
She scowled at him, the expression little more than a slight pressing of her lips into a thin line and a brief, scornful flash of her eyes before she looked away.
Taryn envied him his ability to detach himself in these moments. She wished she knew how.
âMiss Foley.â
She forced her attention onto Leverrier, noting the faint, veiled impatience in his eyes. Then she smiled, the expression deceptively kind and warm, almost apologetic, and signed, her hands flying.
He couldnât keep up.
So he didnât know that she had blatantly told him what she thought of the Order, her words leaving no room for doubt.
And neither could Lavi tell him. Not yet, at least; he didnât have a full grasp of the language of the Foley twins just yet.
Your entire organization could be razed to the ground and I wouldnât shed a tear.
The gyrfalcon perched on the back of the chair she was seated in squawked, and she could feel his confusion in her mind.
The Vatican and its Black Order had hoped to subjugate Taryn and quash all hints of rebellion.
Instead they had reopened a wound that had been nearly healed, had allowed infection to seep into it and--
They had no way of knowing how that wound was festering right under their noses.
âMiss Foley,â Leverrier said evenly. âHow are you adjusting?â
She shrugged noncommittally and signed again, different words this time.
You shouldâve just killed us.
He still had no way of knowing, but Lavi--the redhead drew in a soft breath, and she glanced at him again, quirking a single brow as if daring him to say a word.
Was that a hint of emotion? Apparently sheâd been wrong about his detachment, but that didnât matter.
Leverrier had caught the sound, too, it seemed. He glanced sidelong at the exorcist. And then he looked at Taryn Foley again.
âWhat do you know of the Fourteenth?â
Well, for one thing, he hates that, she formed the words with her hands. Then she sat back and crossed one leg over the opposite knee, smiling pleasantly. Itâs just a nickname.
Lavi shifted, and she could practically hear the question burning on the tip of his tongue; he wanted to ask her what that meant.
Leverrier narrowed his eyes. âWe know you and your sister traveled with him. Your Innocence even synchronized with you more rapidly in that time. Why is that?â
Her smile widened slightly as her hands moved, and she still refused to give him a straightforward answer.
