“ aloy! happy burt day! ” gizmo jumps onto aloy with a bunch of wild flowers in his little hands. it's not much, but it's life. it's proof that this planet still has hope.

when aloy wakes this morning, the sun is already climbing the sky and gizmo is conspicuously missing. she's not worried—he sometimes wanders off to do his own thing, and he's smart enough (not to mention small enough) to avoid the notice of any dangerous machines with relative ease.

so she sits with her back against a tree and makes herself a breakfast of the dried and salted meats she always keeps at hand for such occasions, stoking the fire back to life while she waits for him to return. it's not long before he reappears, scrambling up onto her knee and offering up a bundle of wildflowers.

“aloy! happy burt day!”

the former outcast blinks in surprise, eyebrows drawn together. “i—how did you know that?” in all honesty, even aloy herself didn't realize the day was coming up. she only has it marked on her focus calendar so she can orient herself. birthdays were never really a big deal for her growing up, just a way to mark the passing of time until she had the chance to win the proving.

smiling slightly, aloy accepts the flowers. “thank you, they're beautiful.” she tucks one into the hair behind her ear. “and useful too, you know? if i smell like these, i'm less likely to spook animals during a hunt.”
