#let them fall

Sind wir mal ehrlich: Metal ist vorwiegend von männlichen Stimmen geprägt. Die Gründungsväter des Heavy Metals, James Dio (Dio) , Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath) oder Lemmy Kilmister (Motörhead) prägten die noch relativ junge Musikrichtung des Heavy Metals mit ihren Stimmen. Dass Metal die vielfältigste Musikrichtung der Welt wird, hatte damals noch niemand wirklich auf dem Schirm. Trotz der großen (und rasant wachsenden) Vielfalt, blieb die Heavy Metal Musik bis zur Jahrhundertwende weitestgehend von männlichen Stimmen, wie der von James Hetfield (Metallica), Alice Cooper oder Kai Hansen (Helloween) geprägt. Weibliche Stimmen würden nicht in die Musikrichtung passen, sagten nicht nur die Labels, sondern auch einige der berühmten Sänger. Aber stimmt das ?

Um das Jahr 2000 herum wurde diese These nicht nur durch die Entstehung des Symphonic Metals und der dazugehörigen Pionierband Nightwish, erstmalig widerlegt. Die kraftvolle, hohe Stimme von Tarja Turunen passte perfekte zu der harten, aber gleichzeitig melodischen Musik.

Als ob das ein Startzeichen gewesen wäre, tauchten über alle Subgenre des Metals hinweg weibliche Stimmen auf, die nicht nur für Abwechslung sorgten, sondern auch die Szene ganz schön aufmischten. Vor allem Stimmen wie die von Amy Lee (Evanescene) sorgten für Furore und prägten in ihrem Fall die Musik um die Jahrhundertwende. 

Trotz der Vielfalt an weiblichen Stimmen im Metal werden Sängerinnen in der Szene oftmals immer noch kritisch betrachtet. Das liegt unter anderem an der recht konservativen Einstellung die einige Subgenre vertreten. Interessanterweise war es nie die Grundintention des Metals, irgendjemanden zu diskriminieren. Als Vater des Punk stellte der Metal eine rebellische Musikrichtung dar, die sich vor allem den Bruch mit den damaligen, durchaus geläufigen, konservativen Werten auf die Fahne schrieb.

Inzwischen sind Frauen am Mikrofon eigentlich nichts besonderes mehr im Metal. Arch Enemy, einer Band die durchaus als Top Act gehandelt wird, bekommt momentan von Alissa White-Gluz ihre Stimme. Eine der (meiner  Meinung nach) besten Metal-/Deathcore Bands, In This Moment, hat mit Maria Brink eine Sängerin, die sich in Sachen Auftritt und Inszenierung durchaus mit Marilyn Manson messen kann. Auch der glutterale Gesang (Das, was nicht Metal-Fans gerne als “Geschreie” bezeichnen) von Sängerinnen findet immer mehr Anklang, vor allem in der Core Szene: Let Them Fall, mit Rita D'aniello befindet sich auf ihrem Weg nach oben.
