You would’ve thought that Art History was one of my favorite subjects, but in fact it was one of the most boring classes I had in college/art school. Reading about ‘The Fauves’ this morning reminded me not about their ‘fauvist’ style, but their execution to market themselves. Their extreme and bold use of color labeled them as ‘Fauves’ (french for ‘beasts’), that formal galleries, or ‘Salons’, back then, wouldn’t exhibit such work. The Fauvist response was a simple one, to group together, and hold their own exhibit, usually at a bar, or bistro, with a wild party to compliment the new art. Many names launched their careers from that style-period, or movement, which also influenced my work, as well.
