Personally, I think Johnny Cade would've killed himself ages ago if it weren't for Ponyboy and the others. The only reason it was excused as "he would have run away a million times if he weren't for me and the others" is that S.E. Hinton didn't want the book to be too graphic. Not to mention he already mentioned he wanted to kill himself twice in the book and it would be useless to add it a third because it would seem like Johnny was nothing more than a depressed little kid with a shitty life and it wouldn't add character.
