Turning the Tables
It was a lazy afternoon at Rileyâs house, and she and Val were sprawled across her bed, laughing about the Firehawksâ last practice.
âYou totally whiffed that shot, Riley,â Val teased, nudging her shoulder.
âDid not!â Riley shot back, grinning.
âOh yeah?â Val smirked. âYou always get so jumpy when youâre nervous. Itâs like youâwait a second.â
Her eyes narrowed with realization. She remembered how Riley practically leapt when a teammate accidentally brushed against her during practice. A slow, mischievous grin spread across Valâs face.
She wiggled her fingers and lightly trailed them over Rileyâs side.
Rileyâs breath hitched. âV-Valâdonât!â
Too late.
Val pounced, digging her fingers into Rileyâs ribs.
âNOHOHO!â Riley squealed, collapsing into helpless laughter as she squirmed beneath Valâs relentless fingers. âV-Val! Stohohop!â
Val cackled. âOhhh, this is golden. Youâre so done for, Riley!â She skittered her fingers up and down Rileyâs sides, sneaking under her arms, making her shriek and thrash.
Just then, the door swung open.
âHey, Riley! We were thinking aboutââ
It was Grace, along with two of their Firehawks teammates. They froze in the doorway, taking in the sceneâRiley a giggling mess, Val looming over her like a villain.
Grace smirked. âOhhh, this is interesting.â
Riley gasped for breath. âG-Guysâhelp!â
The Firehawks exchanged wicked glances.
âYou know,â one of them mused, cracking her knuckles, âRiley is our captain. And itâd be so wrong to let this slide.â
Valâs smirk faltered. âUhâw-wait a secondââ
Too late.
Three sets of hands grabbed her, shoving her down onto the bed.
âHEYâNOHO!â Val yelped as Grace and another teammate pinned her arms above her head, while the third sat on her legs, making sure she couldnât escape. âGuys, câmon, l-letâs talk about thisââ
Riley finally caught her breath and sat up, a slow, evil grin creeping across her face. She leaned in just a little closer, her face hovering over Valâs, their noses almost brushing.
âOhhh, no way. You started this, Val.â
Val gulped, suddenly all too aware of how close Riley was. âRiley, buddy, palâl-letâs be reasonableââ
Riley wiggled her fingers teasingly above Valâs stomach. âWhatâs wrong? Jumpy?â
âNOâWAITââ
Riley struck, wiggling her fingers into Valâs ribs.
âGAHAHA! NOHOHO!â Val screamed, thrashing wildly, but the Firehawks held her tight.
âAwww, sheâs so ticklish!â Grace teased, digging into Valâs side, making her jolt.
âY-you traihihitors!â Val shrieked, bucking against them, but she was totally trapped.
Riley grinned. âPayback time!â She spidered her fingers under Valâs arms, making her howl with laughter.
âNOHO! STAHAHAP! IHIHI GIVE!â Val begged, her face turning red as she thrashed against the hold.
Riley leaned down, her voice softer now, almost teasing. âHmm. Do we really believe her, guys?â
Grace pretended to think. âI dunno. She didnât stop when you begged, Riley.â
âYouâre right,â Riley murmured, grinning as she scratched at Valâs stomach, making her dissolve into breathless cackles.
âNOHOHO MORE! I MEAN IT!â Val howled.
Riley finally stoppedâŠfor a moment.
Val gasped for air, blinking up at her. For a split second, the room felt differentâlike it was just the two of them.
âO-okay⊠Y-you got me⊠Weâre good now, right?â Val mumbled, her voice a little breathless.
Riley tilted her head, her fingers still resting on Valâs side. âEhh. I donât think so.â
Val barely had time to react before Riley struck again, her fingers skittering up her ribs, making her squeal.
âWHATâNOHOHOHO!â Val screeched, twisting helplessly.
âYeah, no,â Riley teased, biting her lip as she watched Val squirm. âIâm not done yet.â
Val was done for. And the Firehawks? They just sat back and enjoyed the show.
