This case is absolutely fascinating and really makes you think about the way our view of criminality has evolved.
Stoke City v. Arsenal
I haven't said much about Arsenal this season, but what I read today has forced my hand.
So Steven Nzoni proudly declares that "We know that Arsenal are a very technical team that play good football, and when you start kicking them a little bit, it gets a little bit harder for them.
"They don't like that, we know that," and the general response to this attitude is that Arsenal simply need to toughen up, and that teams like Stoke City are simply playing to their strengths.
But "kicking or attempt[ing] to kick" an opponent is the first foul in Law 12 covering fouls and misconducts. So it is, by the rules of the game, cheating. That is why it is punished. And we now know beyond a shadow of a doubt that this cheating was and is a game plan that Stoke City consciously and willingly play -- and that most football fans tacitly support. Surely Arsenal fans have some reason to complain when one considers how many of these intentional kicks went completely unpunished and that play was allowed to simply go on.
Imagine this: Luis Suarez gives an interview and says something like, "We know that goals win games, and so I dive in the box and all over the pitch to make sure we score goals. Other teams don't like it, we know that, but it wins games."
Would people support him and say the other teams need to suck it up? Unlikely. What would the levels of outrage be to a statement like that? Vitriolic is my guess.
More than anything else, what Steven Nzonzi's comments say to me is that defenders need to be better footballers. They need to be able to defend without cheating. Or, at least, the Referees need to take their own Laws more seriously. When a team like Stoke declares that they gladly cheat, every single foul should be called, with yellow cards (I am looking at you Charlie Adam) being handed out regardless of the potential for a sending off.
