“Everybody” by MADONNA (Sire Records) is one song I found myself subvocalizing the morning after. Sometimes I’ll have a song subvocalized words and all, before I find out the title and who did it. In this case I was pretty sure it was called “Everybody” because that word accounts for about half the song’s lyrics. It didn’t take long to find out that it was performed by a very attractive young woman named Madonna and it wasn’t terribly surprising to learn it was produced by MARK KAMINS, one of the most popular and often used DJ’s in New York clubland. Kamins knows what dancers like and he has applied that knowledge to mixing several records and now he’s producing too. I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes one of the hottest dance music producers on the scene, “Everybody” is a perfect club record, it’s got a beat and a hook you want to get to know better. It seems to be all electronic, drum machines and synthesizers but these are programmed straight from the heart and the hip. The lilting little tune seduces immediately, inviting and grabbing, and it’s perfectly punctuated with a quick pulse. Madonna’s voice is warm and sexy. The lyrics may be classic in their lack of ambition, concentrating on little more than invitations to the dance.

Laura Levine: Madonna and I did an extended portrait session in my Chinatown apartment back in 1982 for Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine. She arrived by herself and we spent the next several hours shooting away. She was very professional, open-minded, and a terrific collaborator.
