O L D H A U N T S Carpenter Street and surrounds are full of history. Some terraced shophouses have been renovated and turned into cafes, kopitiams and accomodation. Lau Ya Keng is a hive of hawker stalls. It is opposite the Hiang Tiang Siana Ti Temple. Uncle had the wontons which the Aunties assured him are the best because it has a certain amount of fish in the filling. A wander around sees kopitam stalls selling Bak Chang and Lek Tau Suan - the later is a classic hawker street food. It’s split mung beans in light syrup with hints of pandan and topped with Yau Char Kueh/You Tiao/Chinese cruellers. Childhood memories flood back. Aunty at the store on Upper China St makes gold and silver paper offerings to ancestors and gods at the family altar or temple. This afternoon’s excursion is rudely interrupted by the sight of the monstrosity that has blighted the previously tranquil and sanguine skyline of the Lau Pah Sat along the Sarawak River - the ill-conceived Bangunan Dun, the Council Negeri that’s used only 4 times a year.
