You know as I read Stephanie's post on racism in kindergarten, I thought I might comment on it as well. When I moved to Dallas from Georgia I was placed in all advanced classes with kids of the same skin color as me. Which is interesting, from a seventh graders point of view, to go from regular classes with people of all races to advanced classes with a majority white (with a few other) kids. They were moving me up a grade level in math, completely skipping certain classes, to put me in these "special" ones. I was never good in math as a kid, so I struggled. I struggled all throughout high school because of it. Year after year until we graduated I was in the same classes with the same kids, who were mostly white. We were treated differently too. Treated as if we were the elite of the school, which was sort of true. The school district separated us by who they thought was going to go far in life and who were not. Kids who were not in the advanced classes usually didn't go to college after high school. Or if they did they went to the community college. They didn't have the same opportunities as we did growing up and they certainly weren't encouraged to move froward with their lives. They set those kids up to fail. Solely because they believe that your race dictates your future.
I am so proud of one of my best friends. She is such an amazing person and she deserves an equally amazing partner. Cheers to you Stephanie.
Hi, I just read you - and this is crazy... but I'm new to your blog and I'm loving it. (:
Aww, you just met me! And this is crazy, but you're really cute--I'm creepy maybe?
Let's seal our tumblr friendship now with a gratuitous shot of Holden Nowell's chest. :*
