1. My relationship to digital media changed after taking this course because before taking this class, I had no clue how to use garage band and had a few ideas on iMovie, but now I am much more familiar with how to use it. I feel like I will even listen and view podcasts and documentaries way differently in the future. In the past I would have just listened to a podcast and just viewed the story of what the person was saying. I wouldn’t give much thought into the sounds in the background or the technique. I realize that the sounds in the background are very important in portraying their message. Without the sounds, there is no image and just a voice. Also in documentaries, the order of how parts of a video is very important because if it flows nicely, it will share the message better as well.
2. One technique and principal I will take away from this course is the importance of putting in music. Music really does make the listener/viewer feel a certain way. One does not really realize it until they have to make it themselves. When you put a happy song, the listener automatically feels a tone of happiness. When you put in sad music, it changes the feeling as well which is very important in conveying the message correctly. I also learned more about the idea of a “collage.” Before, I viewed a collage as nothing more than pictures put together, or random pieces of art to make one piece of art. Now, I see it as a way of taking random parts to create one big message. The pieces by themselves do not mean much, but together, it will create something larger.
3. My relationship to creative writing was changed after taking the course because I never knew writing can also be creative through sounds and images. I thought that was a very interesting way of looking at things. When we think of creative writing, we thinking of interesting literature, poems, etc. However, we realize that it can be shown through speaking, sounds, and videos. I also learned that writing can actual be very fun! All throughout middle school, high school, college, we had and have to write boring papers that no one looks forward to. People spend all day and night writing these papers that give so much stress. However, in creative writing when we wrote newspaper articles, stories about our lives, sono-essays, they did not take long at all. It was just as easy as writing a Facebook post or writing an Instagram caption. It did not feel like we were doing work which was a free feeling.
4. It is important to write creatively and make digital media because people are intrigued by these kinds of things. People like to read and watch things that are interesting. Not many people will pay attention to the generic, boring essay. They’ll tune out! However, if the piece is creative, has emotions, opinions, people tend to pay attention much more. They will find it more relatable or easier to understand. Even if they do not agree with the opinion or idea, the fact will remain that they still read it and understood it and that is a main point.
