Larry Young: Born October 7, 1940

Larry Young was born on October 7, 1940. In his short (37 years) life, he transformed the organ into a powerful, vivid experimental instrument, recording incandescent Blue Note sessions with the likes of Elvin Jones, Sam Rivers, Woody Shaw, Joe Henderson and the like. In 1969, he and John McLaughlin joined the Tony Williams Lifetime, an explosive, unrelenting band fusing jazz and rock. He later toured with Carlos Santana, but by the mid ‘70s, after a few lackluster albums, his career stalled. Then in 1977, a great recording contract with Warner Bros. promised a comeback.
