I finished Ask Larry - The Collected Leather Notebook Columns and I'm gutted because that's probably the most fun I've had reading a paperback in years.
How Larry Townsend had the patience for some of these guys is beyond me, but above that, his dedication to the column has to be celebrated. Taking the time to consult medical advisors or experts in fetish scenes that weren't personally his bag, track down the addresses and contact information for various organisations and clubs, all to help some guy out in fucking Albuquerque or whatever other corner of the planet his readers would mail from. Drummer and Larry's own catalogue did their best to get their wares to any guy who asked for it, no matter where they were, no matter the chance of it being scutinised at customs and returned, or how bloody expensive it would cost to ship it in the first place.
Such a fun read, and so invaluable if you want to know intimately how people were reacting to AIDS as it came about, got worse, and was adapted to with the ever-changing information on the virus across those 13 years of the Leather Notebook.
I just know I'll keep peeling it open to reminisce on whatever hilarity or precious piece of history that pops into my head from now on. I don't want to admit how many photos I took of any passage that caught my attention. I should really go back and annotate/tab these things. Oh a new mission!
Advertisement for The Leatherman's Handbook II by Larry Townsend [Pg. 25, Drummer magazine, Issue No. 57, October 1982]. Featured an alternative cover illustration and a lengthy excerpt of a smut short.
This issue of Drummer has typos on the cover and contents page, calling it 'The Leatherman's Handbook III'. However, this is rectified in the ad itself and the footnote.
The footnote states that the book was to be published in December 1982; however, all copies of the first edition state on the copyright page that it was printed in 1983. Maybe it got pushed!
This listing on AbeBooks seems to be the only place where this promotional bookmark is photographed, which makes sense because I doubt there are many more that have survived since its printing in 1977.
I am gonna recreate it in Photoshop for a cleaner version to put in my graphics for The Leatherboy's Novice fic. Does it make sense for Eddie to have somehow got his hands on this? Not at all. Do I wanna feature it anyway? 1000 fucking per cent.
Tie me up;
Gag me;
Blindfold me;
Whip me;
Humiliate me;
Piss on me;
Fuck me;
But PLEASE, SIR.
Don't lose my place!
