Another oldie! ThisĀ āBraided Hair Large Centā is from just before the Civil War and ran 1839-1857. This is actually about the size of a current-day US quarter- hence the nameĀ āLarge Centā. This was the last penny style to be minted to that size, as the next die for the 1C piece was the firstĀ āSmall Centā (the current penny size) in theĀ āFlying Eagleā design. Iāll put up an image of the Flying Eagle cent at some point too, though mine is in pretty iffy condition. Obverse Text: "Libertyā (crown of bust) Reverse Text:Ā āUnited States of America... One Centā Approximate Value: ~$30
The only interesting coins I have in my small coin collection. Ā Most of my coins were acquired from loose change or from my parents, but these came from a colleague of my dad who acquired them at coin shows. Ā
The top one is a Matron Head Large cent dating back to 1827. Ā The middle coin is a Standing Liberty quarter dating between 1917 and 1924. Ā There was an issue with the Standing Liberty quarter, which started circulation in 1917, where the date would wear off and this was corrected in 1925. Ā Since this quarter has no date I'm assuming it's pre-1925. Ā The bottom coin is a mis-struck penny. Ā An interesting deformation, I'm not quite sure how it got out of the mint since it's not even coin shaped.
