Day 45 of posting cute creatures monstrosities we found on our field trip:
This beast is Saga hellenica, the largest predatory insect in Europe. It lives in the Mediterranean. We caught her in the middle of devouring a poor katydid. This insect doesn’t have any venom, but it has scary force. Its bite can seriously hurt you and the serrated edges of its legs can actually cut through skin. They are sharper than grabbers of mantises. These insects can also jump over 1.5 meters high, so stay away from them. Our entomology professor said that he’d feel uncomfortable holding this beast if it wasn’t occupied with prey. Here are some other angles:
This individual is a female because she has a long sword-like ovipositor. Males can be even larger.
an adorable Chinese tussar moth found on reddit! the antennae might be *the* fluffiest that i had ever seen.

It's quite rare that I find an insect during the winter but this beneficial insect, the Eyed Elater, was found in our woodstove fire wood stash. The fake eyes are really cool and it's a member of the Click Beetle family and it actually eats wood-boring insects that kill trees. So this guy is a keeper for sure.
