When Pazu catches Sheeta | Castle in the Sky Fanart Instagram | Twitter
I was watching Castle in the Sky for class— the class I teach every year— and midway through the movie I paused it and looked to my class,
“… is it just me, or is this score odd?”
Most of them haven’t seen the film before, but we’ve all seen Miyazaki’s movies. This film does NOT sound like a Miyazaki movie. One of them says, “I wasn’t going to say anything, but every impact had been an orchestra hit instead of a sound effect.”
“Yeah,” I said, “I don’t remember it being so poorly designed.”
I play the film again. The majority doesn’t have music, and the music that IS present is very… synth-like. I hear some of the core melodies, but it’s a far cry from the music I KNOW is so well-loved in most other Miyazaki films.
I look it up, and it turns out I have NEVER seen the original film. There are three versions, each with different audio! We were watching the original english dub, which has most of the original soundtrack. It got re-scored in 1999 (originally released in 1986) to include a whopping FIFTY additional minutes of music and that more well known, classically orchestral score. Totally blew my mind!
oh, to experience a ghibli hug

More miraculous than a castle in the sky, more unbelievable than a magical necklace: the fact that Pazu had a raw egg in his bag through their escape from the Military and the Dola Gang and it NEVER CRACKED.
