How differently do they think of each other now compared to when they first met?Okay, so, when Rio and Ruri first met, they were in a tournament in duel school. Back then, Ruri was pretty new to dueling, only having really started after Yuushou started spreading his philosophy. Rio and Ryouga had dueled ever since they were children, so Rio ends up winning against Ruri.
In Rio, Ruri sees something strong and confident, something honest- and Ruri admires it. Rio’s brother - while still being a douche sometimes - respects her as a duelist a lot more than Shun respects Ruri as a duelist, and Ruri would like to be a little more like that, too.
Likewise, Rio appreciates Ruri’s kindness, and possibly appreciates having a friend who she doesn’t have to prove herself against all the time.
As the Academia invasion happens, Rio becomes more ruthless in order for everyone to survive, while Ruri retreats a lot more.
Rio disapproves of that, because she thinks Ruri’s lack of field experience will drag her down (which, you know, it does).
That’s how Rio ends up training with Ruri when she has time, but their relationship is a bit strained at that time.
So, you could say what they both appreciated about each other ended up being a problem, because that’s what war does to people.
What do their friends/family think of their relationship?Shun approves, because Rio is responsible and sensible and won’t hurt Ruri. Also, Rio gets Ruri to listen far faster than he himself ever would. Ryouga is torn on it, because for him the Resistance takes priority, but Rio isn’t neglecting her duties and seems happier this way, so it’s fine. Sayaka is slightly sad, but she wants the best for Ruri. Yuuto, of course, is frustrated.
