The Ticking Tomb of Landenberg
The old cemetery by the London Tract Meeting House in Landenberg, PA houses one of Americaās most famous legends. The Ticking Tomb is just that, a tombstone that is said to tick to the steady pace of a pocket watch. Although there have been no confirmed reports of the ticking, at least in recent years, the legend that arose goes something like this:
While famous surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon were marking out the border between North and South colonies for tax purposes in the mid-1760s, they encountered the infant Fithian Minuit while camping a few miles from Landenberg. The child had crawled into their tent and began to cry. When Mason tried to calm the baby with his pocket watch, Fithian took it and swallowed it. According to legend, Fithian grew up to be a clockmaker, as a strange ticking sound followed him through life. His wife Martha supposedly told him the ticking would represent their love; as long as the watch in Fithianās stomach continued to tick, their love would continue. When the two died and were buried side-by-side, the ticking supposedly continued from the grave.
Their are no confirmed reports of a ticking sound coming from the grave, and the sound appears only in legend. Researchers have agreed that an underground spring likely runs under the cemetery, the flow of which could account for a steady ticking sound coming from one specific area. The legend likely arose from the sound, and Landenbergās historical connection to something as significant as the Mason-Dixon line. The spring has shifted in recent years, which accounts for the sound no longer being heard.
The reason the Ticking Tomb story is so famous is that many believe it inspired Edgar Allen Poeās storyĀ āThe Tell-Tale Heart.ā Poe actually did stay in the area a short time before that story was published.Ā

What does a professional gardenerās gardens look like? Hereās a peek at mine. While I have visited a few professional gardenerās gardens, and they are much more elaborate than mine, I like to keep mine fun and simple with seeding annuals. As a single girl, I choose to rent. As I do like to improve my home, Iām also focusing on keeping costs low. With the many clients I serve, Iām also too exhausted at the end of the day, to develop my own beds! Here in these photos, I have planted Zinnias (3 different varieties), Cosmos, Alysum, and the big guys are Sunflowers (this bed is direct South facing) and the vegetables are a fun little project. Seeing these flowers grow to over 10 ft tall has beed a lot of fun! And isnāt that what gardening is all about? The Zinnias give me color first; August thru October the Cosmos and Sunflowers give me color; and in the winter, the birds will be all over the sunflowers. Sowing seeds are soooo easy! Zinna, Sunflower, Cosmos and Alysum germinate easily, and they donāt need much water. Hereās how. āsprinkle your selected seeds on top of your mulch in the spring āuse a metal rake, and rake the seeds into the mulch āwater nightly, until your plants are about 4 inches tall ā Cosmos and Alysum will self seed next year, and you can use the old Zinnia seeds to re-sow the following year.
