Hello Friends. It’s been a while. Gardening is my thing-not necessarily blogging. However, my marketing consultant scolded me for not blogging, so here I am. Being a really good girl. Blogging.
With so many gardening topics to write about, I think I should start with what’s going on in the professional world of gardening here in zone 7 or 6b. Right now we are relaxing because when season comes, we will be running around like lunatics trying to get everything done. Fortunately, while relaxing we are also designing gardens for our clients- that’s fun- and ordering plants and planning the schedule for the year.
If you are a home gardener, I definitely recommend sitting down and making a list of what you want to accomplish in the garden this year. Start with the top 3 things that bothered you the most (I say 3 because that will take most home gardeners all year to accomplish). Most often I hear that it’s weeds and spaces in the garden where nothing grows and overgrown shrubs that bother clients the most.
For weeds: write down your plan of attack, with a SCHEDULE. Yes. put it in your schedule to get it done!! If you have weeds that spread by seed, pre-emergent is a fantastic product to stop them from germinating; if you have weeds that spread by runners ( like thistle) you will need a very powerful herbicide to kill them (and be prepared to apply weekly!). Figure out your square footage, and purchase the appropriate amount for your beds now, to save you time this summer. *Killing weeds is another blog in itself -for another time.
For empty spaces: figure out the light and soil conditions in that space, and do your research on what plants will grow there. I always recommend NATIVES! Next find where you can purchase them. The sooner you get them in the ground, the more time they will have to adapt before the heat of the summer puts stress on them.
For overgrown shrubs: Again. Do your research on the pest practices to make them smaller. I recommend using hand saws and pruning by hand as much as possible.
For all of these task it is best to hire me, your local gardener or a professional gardener who you can trust. It may cost a little more up front, but in the long run, it will cost less. A qualified professional gardener has grown thousands of plants in thousands of locations and will make sure that everything they plant will thrive where it is planted. Selective pruning is very important to maintain the health, youth and beauty of a shrub or tree. It is not only a task that requires proper training, but an art. So if you get it done right, it’s worth the expense.
