Inktober Day 15: Ragged
When I adopted Ladybug, I think itβs safe to say we were both in rough shape. I had just put down my best friend, Spyro, and she was coming from a home where physical touch was cruel and far too familiar. We were both grieving lives that could no longer be chased. I still remember the days I would return to my apartment, only for her to lash out at me and draw blood. I spent days trying to find somewhere better for her to live; I was so sure that she needed more than I could ever provide for her. I remember being on call with a cat shelter, only for the woman on the other line to tell me that if I dropped her off, Ladybug would most likely be put down. That day I decided that I had a cat.
Over the next few weeks, I spent hours every day just existing around her. I gave her fresh chicken every morning and every night. When she lashed out at me, I didnβt react with fear or anger. I spoke calmly and told her how much I loved her, even as her teeth sank further into my hand. It took one year for her to be okay existing in the same room with me. It took her two to sit on my lap.
I wanted to draw this piece as a reminder, not for what she was, but how far she has come. And in return? I want to thank her for allowing me to feel that frustration that is learning to trust again. Now, even on the days where the world feels too heavy or my brain is too loud or the grief is scalding and Iβm run ragged with emotions that not even words could encapsulate? She greets me in the window, mismatched eyes staring at me with something deeper than trust itself. She makes being ragged bearable π₯Ήππ±

'Cause sometimes I look in her eyes
And that's where I find a glimpse of us
Sometimes the way Ladybug looks at me feels so familiar. It makes the necklace I wear feel a bit lighter π₯Ήπ
She saw another cat outside and now she's pissed π
