yes hello did i hear lady amis??? i mean, LEZ Amis. enjolras as the androgynously beautiful tomboy that really doesn't care much about style because equality and justice and anger and it suits her so well that she doesn't even need to care about style. courf the short curly haired one with bowties that is connected to literally EVERYONE on the spitchain. combeferre as the librarian kind of girl with oversized sweaters, not infantile-cute and not even hot on the first look
but she has this distinct, elegant and classical air about her. them all being passionate feminists, maybe even publishing a zine, like those old riot grrl zines were. bossuet with a shaved head, joly the doctor that always gets grumpy when people assume she's just a nurse (nurses are cool and everything but, you know.) and bahorel a power femme, fabulous in her doc martens and floral dresses and R the art student with no time to paint her own facade on with make up and therefore always having dark circles under her eyes. and boy jehan (i can't really see him as a lady, which is odd) and musichetta being a dude, yo! and everyone always assumes that he's The Man bc he's got two girlfriends (srsly, if u ever call them bitches you will end up with a broken nose, ego and an overwhelming feeling of shame for your terrible misogynistic ass) and they just laugh bc if the girls didn't make the first move they'd be all still pining
and oh god feuilly the single mum. like. can u imagine. how much shit does she get.
OH MY GOD, yes, this is amazing so much love for this whole thing. ZINES, fuckin hell, it was my dream all throughout high school to publish a radical feminist zine, and i hoarded newsprint paper and made printing blocks and stuff but... it never happened. so i LOVE THIS.
enjolras, ferre, and courf all sort of came together in high school and started publishing zines - enjolras wrote most of the more political statements, ferre edited and added some research and fun feminist facts, courf wrote her own pieces on pop culture and gender and stuff (and of course got everyone to buy copies, even the massive people on the football team who could have cared less). enjolras is a demigirl, something that she discovered one day when courf had put in a segment about gender identity, and even though she still goes by she/her pronouns she fully identifies outside of the strict gender binary.
bossuet either rocks the shaved head or grows it out to suit her. one time she grew out a little mohawk and spiked it up until she got bored and decided to shave her head again. sometimes she shaves her eyebrows too and does an amanda palmer and draws them on creatively with eyeliner. sometimes she gets grantaire to draw her brows, effectively making them a work of art.
joly is really fuckin tired of people assuming that she's a nurse - not because being a nurse is bad, but because the gender binary and assumed gender roles are shit and have no place in the workplace, but there they are. she's asian, too, which makes it so much worse for her in terms of stereotypes. she joined the amis with bossuet and that helped her find more of a voice to call out the bullshit at the hospital she works at. (she also dresses impossibly cute - sure she sees a lot of blood and injuries and disease at the hospital, but that doesn't mean that she can't do it whilst wearing an impossibly cute frock, like this one or this one.)
bahorel is the Ultimate Angry Femme, who dresses consistently like it's Seattle in 1994. She owns a lot of Raincoats records. She also takes boxing - not kickboxing, regular boxing - and flattens every guy who thinks she'll be easy to beat just because she's a girl. She's almost six feet tall, with dreadlocks and intimidating arm muscles, but she wears a lace dress at least once a week and really enjoys playing with the puppies at the pet shop. all of the puppies. she owns this dress. the amis have never seen her not wearing her dr martens, which are scuffed and worn in and basically the best boots ever.
grantaire is the kind of girl who doesn't give a shit about anyone's opinions (i mean, none of the amis do, but grantaire especially doesn't) - except for when she's going out. her everyday outfits consist of ripped skinny jeans, white, black, and grey t-shirts and three different hoodies in differing shades of green. she also wears combat boots a lot, and bahorel loves her for it ("boot sisters! we're boot sisters! this means we're superheroes now, and also you have to come to the gym with me this week." "bahorel you are awful, fine, but we're not superheroes."). but! when she's going out! she tames her hair and puts on red lipstick and eyeliner and incredibly slinky dresses and flirts with everyone and usually ends up punching an asshole guy in the teeth. it's everyone's favourite sport to watch.
jehan - well, jehan might not necessarily be a lady, per se (they identify as agender, with spivak pronouns) ((although i do have some headcanons for lady!jehan but i much prefer nb!jehan)) but e has long hair, wears a lot of really dark eye makeup, and can often be found draped in scarves and wearing a very strange hat. generally ey are kind if someone misgenders em, just because - well. people have their ideas about what long hair and makeup mean - but if someone's aggressively awful then jehan will waste no time in issuing a verbal smackdown and sometimes a physical one, usually aided by Bahorel. ey help courf with the gender bits in the amis zine sometimes, but usually jehan writes poetry that is totally incongruous with the rest of the zine, but the amis love em so obviously every poem gets published. but yeah, there are some days when jehan presents really femme, and some days when ey don't, but it's whatever. ey share a lot of clothes with grantaire.
musichetta is the most voluptuous sensual person ever. like, her personality communicates those facts, and everyone's completely in love with her. joly and bossuet are like, yeah. she's ours. whatcha gonna do. musichetta is also the unofficial group mother. she loves it.
feuilly is enjolras's role model, idol, and idea of perfection. she had her kid - marcel - at age seventeen, managed to finish school, and is now at university about to complete her degree, all accomplished whilst raising a kid. enjolras is over the moon about feuilly, because she stands for almost everything enjolras believes in. strength, self-determinism, a solid front in the face of adversity. feuilly takes zero shit from anyone, especially about marcel, because it was her own fucking choice to have a kid and the age at which it happened has nothing to do with her as a person. she will tell anyone this, sometimes with her fists. she has a lot of really awesome tattoos, and grantaire designed some. she reads the zine, but doesn't contribute. sometimes enjolras will put a "quote" in there, and feuilly will snort and kind of pat enjolras on the shoulder hesitantly, in a "you done good" gesture. enjolras has to try really hard not to faint.
