Well, it was worse than heād imagined. Calling his cousin had been Lachlanās last resort once he had burned pretty much every other bridge available to him. Heād thought nothing would be worse than meeting with his old manager, but he was starting to think that hadnāt been so bad compared to this.
He didnāt even know what to call him. On the phone last week, heād used his first name, but everyone and everything in town called himĀ Mr. Gold.Ā Was he expected to as well?Ā
He used to be good with people.
Leaving the shop behind was like stepping back into the real world. Lachlan had attributed his unease at being in the dark, cramped space to missing the wide open fields of home, but once he was out and breathing in the freshāfreezingāair, he knew it was just Gold and his shop of horrors.
Not that heād seen anything horrific, but that didnāt mean there was nothing lurking inside a grandfather clock or behind a tapestry. He wouldnāt be surprised. Gold looked like an undertaker.
He walked down the main road, ignoring the funny looks he got. He knew how much he looked like his cousin, and he remembered what it was like living in a small town. Everyone would be talking soon enough.

Any chance we're ever going to see how things went for Lacy and Lachlan after the end of Little White Lies?
Ah! Ahahaha. Oh boy. You know, I really wanted to write them but then I read @ifishouldvanishās How Do You SleepĀ and I honestly donāt know if Iāll ever write it now. I think I might be too influenced by how much I love that fic. Like I really love that fic. Go read it if you havenāt already done. Itās slightly different to the set up for my Lachlan/Lacey but it still boils down to marriage of convenience to get around the deportation. Mine wouldnāt be as heavy because my Lachlan and Lacey donāt have the same relationship history. But I still think it might be too close. I should have worked on it at some point in the past four years instead of sitting on it all this time. Iām sorry!Ā
How about "free fallin" in the fandom of your choosing in honour of the late Tom Petty.
OH MY GOD. I have been listening to this and other Tom Petty songs all day long. And it gave me so many Lachelle or Lachacey feels. So something with Lachlan and Belle or Lacey, theyāve just broken up (because Lachlan can be kind of a shithead) and then as in the events of the movie, Lachlan gets his DUI and finds out heās going to be deported and never see his daughter again. At the last second, hoping to save his own arse, he blurts out that he has a fiance. The only problem is now he has to convince Belle/Lacey to actually be his fiance.

Mr. Gold had many regrets in his life. He regretted not divorcing his wife sooner. He regretted that heād never told his father off before he died. He regretted not spending more time with his son.Ā
He regretted letting slip to the librarian, Belle French, that his long lost cousin was flying in from California to stay with him for the foreseeable future while he faced deportation.
āAre you sure I canāt stay?ā Belle asked, leaning against the wooden part of his display counter and staring out the windows like Lachlan might walk through them.Ā
āWhy are you even here in the first place?ā Gold snapped without any bite. Belle just turned and grinned at him. She had never minded his foul moods, and had indeed discovered that ignoring him was the easiest way to get past his prickly barriers. Heād have been annoyed if he wasnāt besotted.
āI came to tell you your book is in,ā she said. Sheād been in his shop for almost half an hour and hadnāt mentioned a book at all.Ā
āWhy donāt I believe you?āĀ
She reached into her purse and pulled out a book, and indeed it was the one heād been in line for for six months. Archie had been reading it since April.Ā
