NOTES: L90 Ballena is surfacing with a bow-backed, stiff way, which CWR has begun to notice as when she is presumed to be pregnant. This is her fourth potential, and at 29 years old, she has never been seen with a living calf, likely due to her smaller  size. “ L90 currently has the sway-backed look she has had in the past when we have suspected her to be pregnant. “

L89 Solstice is Missing “ The L54s and L88 were not present during this encounter. Everybody else in L pod was photographed by the end of the day with the exception of L89. Our friend and colleague Jared Towers had had the L12s up off northern Vancouver Island in front of Alert Bay on January 13th and L89 had not been present then either. L89 was last seen on November 5th, 2021 and he looked normal at that time. This is worrisome but we will continue looking for L89 until the rest of the southern residents are thoroughly documented in 2022. “

“Matia’s wandering family”

The Southern resident killer whales number less than a hundred. Eighty-three (just seventy-six as of 2017) members of one, big, extended family that roams the Salish sea and beyond. On this painting are the remaining members of the L12 matriline. Once lead by L12 Alexis, its members now solely consist of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren she left behind. The L12 matriline has always been a close-knit group that took its own course, away from the rest of the L-pod, and they continue to do so today. They tend to go further south than the others, and never wander far from each other.

Swimming in front is L77, Matia. Her second calf is L119 Joy, who can be seen in the background as the leftmost whale. Behind Joy is Matia’s big brother Mega, L41. Swimming on the right, with a calf by her side, is L94 Calypso, Matia’s eight year younger sister. Calypso is a mother to one of the babyboom calves: born in 2015, one-year-old L121 Windsong stays close to her flank. On Calypso’s right side swims her older daughter L113 Cousteau who is now seven years old. By watching her mother care for Windsong she may be learning for the day when she will hopefully have a calf of her own.

The L12′s are a matriline that consists of 4 matrilines, the L28′s, the L32′s, the L11′s, and the L25′s. During Mid-summer of 2019, the L12′s were documented in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. They weren’t seen again until January 2020. 

L41 Mega- listed as missing as of January 24, 2020. He is not known to travel away from his family group. 

L94 Calypso - Female, daughter of L11 Squirty, mother of L113 Cousteau and L121 Windsong, sister of L77 Matia, aunt of L119 Joy and L124 Whistle. She and L77 Matia are often seen babysitting each others offspring. She is 25 years old.

L113 Cousteau - female, daughter of L94 Calypso, sister of L121 Windsong, neice of L77 Matia, cousin of L119 Joy and L124 Whistle. She is 11 years old. 

L121 Windsong - Male, son of L94 Calypso, brother of L113 Cousteau, nephew of L77 Matia, cousin of L119 Joy and L124 Whistle. He is 5 years old. 

L25 Ocean Sun - Female, mother of Lolita/Tokitae who is being held in captivity at the Miami Seaquarium. She is the oldest living female in the SRKW community at 92 years old. 

L77 Matia - Female, daughter of L11 Squirty, sister of L94 Calypso, Mother of L119 Joy and L124 Whistle, aunt of L121 Windsong and L113 Cousteau. She is 33 years old. 

L119 Joy - Female, daughter of L77 Matia, sister of L124 Whistle, cousin of L121 Windsong and L113 Cousteau. She is often seen with L121 Windsong and L113 Cousteau. She is 8 years old. 

L124 Whistle - Unknown gender, offspring of L77 Matia, sibling of L119 Joy, cousin of L121 Windsong and L113 Cousteau. They are 1 year old. 

L85 Mystery - Male, son of L28 Misky, cousin of L22 Spirit and L85 Onyx. He is often seen with L77 Matia, L124 Whistle, and L119 Joy. He is 29 years old. 

L22 Spirit - Female, daughter of L32 Olympia, mother of L89 Solstice, brother of L87 Onyx, cousin of L85 Mystery. She and Solstice are most often seen together and sometimes travel away from the rest of the group. She is 49 years old.
