drawing without lineart is really different, you’re gonna need time to get the hang of it, and a lot of experimenting to find the method that fits you!the method which you probably saw, is a new one layer method I picked up just two weeks ago. I actually didn’t draw a full picture with it yet, but I find it really nice~this post shows the process more or less.1. first you draw a very general and quick sketch. It’s actually good to have a crappy sketch here! this way, It’ll be easier to create a clean look and you won’t get too scared to lose detail or ruin it!2. next you paint on it with the airbrush tool (used the good ol’ defult brush). just basic colors, with the sketch a bit visible.3. adding basic shadow, the same way.4. refining the lines and fixing the sketch. I use the brush tool here but you can use whatever! think of it as an half assed lineart.5. now you start to blend it over, shaping the light and shadows. I use a mix of brush and airbrush.6. MAGIC TIME WOW. this part takes the most time, and in my opinion also the hardest part. here I use brush to blend, and airbrush or pen to add new colors or fix mistakes. you need to give the finishing touch and clean all the lose ends. It’s all about cleaning and refining what you have! (*￣∀￣)

My other method (like this thing) is to draw a detailed sketch and paint the colors beneath it (like so). after I paint beneath it, I combine all the layers, and then I blend in the sketch into the colors. and of course, plenty of cleaning work here as well!

my advise- create a copy of what you have every time you move a step! It gives you confidence that even if something goes wrong, you can always go back.also, if you wanna add some background, I warmly recommed to draw it on a different layer, a loooot easier and efficient. and don’t be afraid to play with brush settings, it’s really easy in SAI and could give you better results.
