I have always thought that Alexei is one of the more interesting minor through notes in the KYverse. He is such a good foil to the other characters because he’s flawed, but not fatally so and that gives him a lot of flexibility. My take on him is that he frequently serves to show Kate she doesn’t have to be perfect to be good enough (in various ways). And for FBKate to have a sports bud who understands why they had to arm-wrestle twenty bikers in a dive bar when their car broke down.

Yelena would be an impossible standard for her if Alexei wasn't around to prove that 1) Yelena can also love idiots unconditionally and 2) (in the verses where theyre together and happy) that if someone like Yelena's mom (who is basically Yelena slightly to the left) can be with a silly goofy loser then Yelena can too.
